Annual Matt Campbell in demand - 2020 version

Campbell loved coaching at Toledo but ultimately left for a bigger job. I don't see any reason he wouldn't leave ISU for a bigger job if it is the right fit. Hard to say what that "right fit" will be, but I'm sure it's out there.
The whole reason CMC left Toledo was because he wanted to build something special. He literally said he thought he could mold Toledo into the next Boise State.

Jamie sold him on the vision that he could do that exact same thing at Iowa State, a place with a foundation, with better resources than Toledo—but zero existing culture or tradition.

And then Jamie gave Matt Campbell the keys to build something special.

What people don’t get is that CMC wouldn’t have that same opportunity at a Michigan, a Notre Dame or an Ohio State. Sure, he could build or maintain those places at their longtime glory, but there the only achievable goal would be to become the next face on that school’s coaching Mount Rushmore.

Here, CMC is the architect, the founder. Not just another face, but hopefully the first face.

I honestly think the only way he leaves is A, for some reason he discovers that he can’t get the job done here, that he doesn’t have the needed resources, or B, he scales the mountain, and is ready for another challenge.

Personally, I don’t see that first condition happening any time soon—if it does. The second one? If CMC moves on after a national Championship or two, I promise not to complain.

Er, too much.

Now, where else could Matt Campbell find another P5 place with better resources than ISU, but zero tradition? Hint: there really isn’t one.

Go Cyclones!

"You win with people" -Matt Campbell

The biggest factor in retaining him as our head coach is keeping those around him in place. If Pollard leaves, if Manning/Heacock leave, I'll start to worry.

Paying the assistants is very important to Campbell. Keeping the staff together is what built the culture. We need to make sure we sustain it.

Manning already left.

You've never been to Detroit and it shows.

Had a great time at Cannabis Cup in 2019. I was really impressed with Detroit. It’s pretty cool. No different from KC, Columbus, Indy or other big “Midwestern” cities. Not as nice as Twin Cities in summer though imo.

Twin Cities in the summer is one of the best places in the country. It's just a perfect climate with so many things to do. It's only like 2.5 months of greatness but they are *chefs kiss*.

Detroit is a fun little area. I think Cleveland and Pittsburgh have done a better job overall but Detroit isn't bad at all

The biggest thing for me is that if this season turns into what we hope it does, it only proves that he can win here. And if you can win at a high level, then why do you leave? Now, if he absolutely wants job A or job B, then it would be understandable that he'd eventually leave for one of those gigs. I hope that he stays and continues to elevate the program.

Campbell is very coy about his private life. I doubt anyone outside the walls of the ISU facility know his specific religious affiliations or things like that. If he even has one. I'm not sure he even has a well known hobby, like Johnny Orr and golf or Paul Rhoads and motor cycling. I'm pretty sure he just spends the offseason in a bunker watching film.

I've heard he likes cross-stitching.

Not sure why his religion matters, but according to an article in the newspaper for the Diocese of Des Moines(The Catholic Mirror) prior to him speaking at a Catholic men’s conference, Matt Campbell is Catholic.
Because the initial question was why he would be interested in Notre Dame.

Michigan is by far the #1 risk. Not even close.

Agreed. Never thought Michigan would be in the position when they hired Harbaugh, but here they are. If JH leaves, Michigan is rolling out the red carpet for MC

I wouldn't worry about Michigan State or Penn State at all. Michigan State isn't a step up, and Penn State has an absolute horse **** culture.

Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame are the jobs that have concerned me over the years.

Texas is laughable. There is absolutely no way Campbell takes a job that makes him play ISU every year.
Is this claim based on the Sandusky scandal? That's ancient history to most, like it or not. In my opinion PSU's culture is probably the best fit for Campbell of the "blue bloods". But I'd give even odds he stays at ISU and becomes our Snyder.

Creighton doesn't have a football team-- let's just merge with them for football purposes and all the sudden we are a Catholic school. Problem solved.

There's still a cult of protectionism around JoePa. Franklin is a weird guy as well. It's a very cult like mentality there, and I don't see Campbell wanting to be in that.

How incredible would it be of CMC followed the road map of Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin. When Alvarez went to Wisconsin, they were a perennial bottom dweller in the B10. He not only won, but changed the program indefinitely and then stayed on after his coaching was done to be the AD.

I could get comfortable with CMC taking Iowa State to a consistent level of success like Wisconsin and then staying on to build upon Pollard's legacy and ensure the success they created was sustained!

Anybody over 30 that is PSU fan does have weird obsession with Joe Pa. PSU is also out-of-touch with reality that they will always be behind OSU. Franklin has actually had a couple of opportunities to knock off OSU, but can never get over the mountain. The problem now is that Day is killing it on the recruiting trail and the gap is growing even larger between Big10 and OSU. If PSU fires Franklin they will be making the same mistakes that Nebraska has been making for so many years.

And Michigan is arguably even further behind OSU than Pedo St. is. The shine has come off of Michigan big time since Carr was forced out. It’s a second tier job in a bad climate and they aren’t pulling anything out of Ohio now unless OSU says they can. Closer to Iowa than they are to OSU.

I guess I still don’t see why that matters.

That tool Urban Meyer is Catholic and when Weiss was getting canned said he would not leave Florida for ND.

Plenty of ND coaches have not been Catholic. Ara Parseghian comes to mind, as well as Davie and Willingham. Rockne wasn’t even Catholic until he had been at ND a number of years.

I feel like the insinuation is that MC could have been an ND fan or have an affinity for them growing up because he is Catholic.

I think there's potential for being a Catholic being a draw to the Notre Dame job. It doesn't have a real effect on the nature of the coaching job, but it could be a pull to work for the most prestigious catholic school in the country.

Probably not the end-all-be-all, but relevant I'd say.
