Annual Matt Campbell in demand - 2020 version

CMC idolizes people like Bill Snyder, which gives me confidence he could be here a long time. However, it seems a lot of comments he's made center on the hopes to build something here. I normally wouldn't be afraid of any of those jobs, but should he win the Big 12 Championship this year, would he feel he has finished the job he set out to do?

I think he'll stay, but I have to admit his success combined with a possible opening at Michigan has me slightly more frightened than I've been in the past. I'm not going to let that ounce of fear take away how extremely happy I am with this team and our coach. Great team this year!

I'd think he'd want to stick around in 2021 for Breece's Heisman and ISU's playoff appearance, but that's just me.

Enjoy the limelight on the program.

You don't realize the article you linked is the exact same article linked in the FIRST POST of this thread, do you?

As for CMC, I don't see him bolting immediately after a season like this. Job security is a nice thing to have, and he's pretty much got it for life right now. Sure, go to Michigan/Texas/whatever "blueblood", get a bigger paycheck, expectation year 1 is win the conference and be in the CFP. The heat is on immediately. Don't win enough in 4 years? Fired. Why put yourself and your family through that? He doesn't have the ego of a Herman/Gene Chizik type. And once you prove you can win at Iowa State, what is left to prove?

Agree with the Take, But need to pay CMC like a Top 25 program. I know they are investing in a bunch of different things around football. But I would focus the money on CMC and getting a competent OC. Most of our close loses in the last few years have come because of the offense.

Wining football games will bring more revenue to the program then upgrading the theatre. :D

My thoughts are this:

CW makes really good points about who his Campbell idolizes: A D3 coach, Bill Snider and I'm drawing a blank on the last one (but another Bill Snider type, maybe the Northwestern coach?). Because of this, ISU may be MC's dream job and he may be living the dream. This is my hope of course.

If MC does want another job I think it would be one of these: Cleveland Browns, Ohio State, Notre Dame or maybe Michigan. WIth Michigan, I'm not sure the current environment would be what he'd want to walk into, but I do think he'd at least talk to them.

All of that said, I'm much less worried about Campbell leaving than some of his staff. Heacock, Manning, etc all will be in high demand. A huge part of our recent success isn't just MC, but the consistency of the whole staff. I'd hate to lose that.
I think that “missing name” you mentioned Campbell admiring would be John Stiegelmeir at South Dakota State. And his own coach at Mount Union, of course.

Bawhahahahaha! Really? This "talking point" blows my mind. We're 8-1 in the BigXII and have one of the best offenses in the BigXII this year and one the best ever at ISU. The OC may have some off games, all OC's do, but he's not even close to a core reason for us losing games. You want to throw money at something then throw it at special teams. You improve that and we wouldn't have lost to UL(still gross) and maybe not to OSU.

Sorry, the OC slander this year has been ridiculous.

Think about the phone call when he called the MBB coach about what it’s like out there. So you chased the money, went to a crappy organization and you’re now in Lincoln? Good to know. Next call would be JP to say, Lincoln ain’t happening.
This same phone call could also be something that makes him think twice about the pros. Fred could tell him horror stories about coaching a team that you have no control over putting together. If Fred learned only one thing in Chicago it was probably that if there is anything worse than recruiting at the Div 1 level it is coaching a team you have no say in putting together.

They call this a coaching carousel. The thing about carousels is, sometimes it’s fun just to stand back and watch everyone else go round and round screaming wildly.

Thanks, Matt Campbell.

I'm starting to think he'd only take the ND job at the college level. I could see him eventually going to the NFL, but I think he really likes the college ranks.

Is there a reason everyone links Campbell to ND? Just curious. I know they have an elite brand in the heart of his preferred recruiting area... but just wasn't sure if there is history with him and ND or why everyone seems to think ND is the most likely spot if he were to leave... I just assumed that since he was an Ohio guy OSU would be the most likely spot.

It’s the Midwest and he’s Catholic, I assume.

"You win with people" -Matt Campbell

The biggest factor in retaining him as our head coach is keeping those around him in place. If Pollard leaves, if Manning/Heacock leave, I'll start to worry.

Paying the assistants is very important to Campbell. Keeping the staff together is what built the culture. We need to make sure we sustain it.

He’s always taken less to offer his staff more, he took less due to covid. I think he’s a good guy who likes what he has here.

Back to Covid, I wonder how much more Pollard will be able to offer him this off season because of it.

I really don't remember how many teams were interested in Ferentz in the early 2000s when he was winning...but after a certain point, teams just stopped asking about Ferentz availability...even though he was winning 7-8 games "most" years... My point (or question) here is...will ISU and Campbell ever get to a point where teams just stop inquiring because he's been here for so long? Just curious.

Good chance on your question. We hope.

now regards to Ferentz, his agent always said that, Steelers were always the rumor, but nobody really heard any other teams. And honestly, firing cowher or tomlin for Ferentz is kinda crazy talk.
