JT Plans

That is exactly what I thought, however, I do think our designs should reflect good engineering; but it's not like we are going to get free services from our students/professors.

Why don't we demolish the Jake and the Olsen and bowl the north end zone- just the lower level. Then above the north end zone place a jumbo screen/scoreboard and build new football offices/ lockers where the Olsen building is currently sitting, and connect it to the stadium. It would put our capacity near 60k, and will completely enclose the stadium.

Exactly! Great idea. The Jake looks all wrong. It is too small for the space that it is in and the corrugated tin roof makes it look cheap.

The original design of the stadium was completely flawed. Double deck and split for the middle of Iowa? Should have been a single level bowl and the facility should have been directly adjacent to Scheman and Hilton with the parking running to the south IMO.

Jacobsen construction was started late '94, building dedicated the night before the Wyoming game in Sept. '96.

It wasn't designed with a whole lot of forethought to future needs.

I don't think previous administrations ever anticipated an AD like JP coming on board with an serious attitude of winning and was willing to expand/upgrade facilities to make us more competitive on the national level.

I think it would be a perfect time for JP to pull an unannounced decision, And suddenly the South Endzone is being erected. Would add excitement for fans to come back for the 2009 season. Spend money to make money baby, the economy is down now, time to take risks and make it happen.

I could not agree more about almost everything except about them building the s end zone next year.

I don't think the S. end zone construction will start at the end of next year unless they get a huge 15-20 million donation, especially with the state of the economy and the way the team has been playing.

They are using the same company to design the entire JT renovations and they are just getting the plans together so they can move forward as soon as they have the money to do so. Ben Bruins has said that as soon as the plans are finalized (which they should be by now), his company could start work with about a 6 week notice.

JP said on a call in show a couple of months ago that 3 things would have to change in order to move ahead with their plans. 1st, the team will have to start playing better and in turn improve attendance. 2nd, the economy will have to improve. 3rd, they would have to have a very large donation to the athletic department.

I got ahold of some info awhile back that showed at the athletic departments current donation rate, they will not have the money to finish JT until 2011 without taking out another huge loan- that the AD is not able to safely do. I think they will get a couple of large donations, and will start construction after the 2010 season.

I totally agree...to start after the 2009 season would require a huge donation. At least $25M. I'm just saying that I think that donation WILL happen this offseason. If JP doesn't have a lead or two on some major donors, why would he even discuss the idea of the endzone work? Why not just stick with the east concourse? There are renderings already finished to show donors.

I was actually being a bit sarcastic. I like the idea myself, however, we won't be able to do anything like that for some time to come. Let's see, 30 years and we are just getting serious about bowling in the S endzone, it will be another 30 before we can think about the n endzone.

I think the location for JT is just fine, especially if JP can finish with his facilities dream of adding a new Baseball and softball stadiums directly across Elwood from JT, as well as a new aquatic center. People ***** about having to park "so far away from Hilton" now, if JT was where the parking lots are they would have to walk close to a mile to get to Hilton from the lots. Having the lots between them is actually good planning.

The Jacobsen Building became inadequate in about 2000 or 2001. There have been so many office shuffles, it's ridiculous.

The press tower didn't even have operable windows until 2008 -- 11 years after it opened. Now it's pushing the limits of capacity, too.

You have to add in demolition costs to the upper deck. If you look at the lower deck, it looks like they're taking out 2 sections on each side to tie it all together.

The gaps have nothing to do with cost to build or being able to sell them, etc..... It has to do with the angling of the endzone upper deck (incline) and that of the sides. They can't match up and make it work right. You will see what I mean once it's built.

I have a feeling if the money is there, that's exactly what they'll do, but I don't think now's the time for ISU to take many risks. You gotta have the money to spend.

ISUclones33 - can you respond to this so I can see the pic in your signature again???!

$25M is going to take a group of donors....I dont see it happening for at least 5 years. The market just tanked and if it does rebound these donors are probably going to put their "extra" money in now and try to make a bit more money.

5 years and a few more wins, then I can see it. All this is just PR to keep building excitment, for you, me and the recruits.

That might be why he is moving forward with the planning, it gives you something to show donors and it shows your serious about completing it. The other thing is that they started planning this before they knew about the BB facility. They had something like 2 million put away for that facility, but the other 6 million is money that would of likely gone toward the stadium. 20 million is alot easier to get ahold of than 25 million.

I hope your right, but I don't think it will happen- it will be two years before we see it.

That, and in the long run, it's probably cheaper to get the whole thing blueprinted at once. You have to take into consideration the south endzone with the current upgrades that are happening. No use designing this, then when the time comes for the SE to find out you have to tear out part of what you just built 4 years ago. Plus, as a bonus, it says we are serious and nothing is complete until the SE is bowled in.

I wonder, had we gotten six wins this year, or even 5, would this have been able to be pushed through quicker? Would we have had more people pumped and willing to donate or does this all fall on the economy?

So tear the whole thing down and build a larger facility than exists. Yeah, I know, it takes more money than we've got. But I like to think large...

Any potential expansion to the press tower would result in the support columns having to be placed basically in the middle of the new concession/restroom buildings. Whoops.

I do not remember the details of Gene Smith's "bowl plan" - anybody have a copy somewhere? I seem to remember that it was bottom bowl only, but the price tag was in the neighborhood of $10-15M. If only we had gotten it done then...

It was a botttom bowl with a basketball practice facility underneath and a large concourse above it...

I actually have the VHS that was mailed out to donors/ticket holders. :biglaugh:

I thought that part of the deal with the new suites was that it would open up the press tower more for the media, they haven't done it though
