There have been many stories of Fran doing things in support of cancer and terminally ill people and from, most accounts, is a great guy to sit down and talk to. But Fran AND Margaret are well known for over the top behavior at eastern Iowa HS games and AAU tourneys. Ask around about the AAU tournament last November that Margaret was asked to leave and she refused to for 5-10 minutes, holding up the game. And then there are the numerous flare-ups/ejections from Hawk games- the aforementioned Ohio State game, the Madison Meltdown, and enough others to recognize a pattern. Once or twice- maybe lost control of his over competitive spirit. As many times as he has, it’s an embarrassment. He’s no TD in terms of demeanor and, no, he hasn’t won on TD’s level yet after a decade.

I mean, these guys that cover basketball for their job are continually amazed at how Fran acts and treats other people.

I'd agree that he has crossed the line multiple times and I've been less than thrilled. However, equating Fran's behavior on a court while in the heat of the moment to his personal character outside of basketball is shortsighted and ridiculous.

I haven't questioned his personal character outside of the court. I believe he's a bad person on the court.
Off hand I cant think of many coaches that get hot takes like this:
Maybe I shouldn't be too harsh on Fran, I mean his inept boss probably hasn't correctly disciplined him over the years, and that probably has some impact.

Last year, my father who is in his early 60's, was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer, a terminal diagnosis. My father is a Cardiologist, former Iowa Faculty member, and one of the most passionate Iowa fans I've ever come across. He has lived the healthiest lifestyle of any man I've ever met in my life. (Cancer is a *****) Fran caught wind of this from some of the old timers in the athletic department who my father had worked with for years prior. Fran personally visited my father on several occasions at my parents home and continues to correspond with him on a weekly basis. I usually wouldn't throw this out there, but after watching my father, who was the strongest and largest man I've ever known, (The man is 6"9") shine. Not shine because he was elated to meet a relatively famous basketball coach. But shine for the simple fact that he forgot how sick he was for a brief moment and was escape reality through the magic of sports and fandom. That is why I am a Fran McCaffery fan.
I'm not trying to take away from your story, all I've said here is on the court related.
