Hakeem Butler Cut

People said Lazard couldn’t catch? I find that hard to believe. The knock on him was his speed. He’s not the fastest guy in the world. Far from in, actually, but Lazard catches the ball and is a good route runner.

Yes the silly anti-ISU Lazard conspiracies need to stop. In today’s game the must have quality in a WR is ability to get in and out of breaks. That was far and away Lazard’s weakness. A good organization like GB figured out what he could bring and utilized him. A large percentage of the NFL are Undrafted FAs. A guy becoming #2 or #3 receiver doesn’t prove anything. He outperformed his draft status, but undrafted guys do that all the time.
Of course it looks like teams made a mistake in not drafting him late, but his story is incredibly common in the NFL.

Yeah they did. Whether Butler makes it in the NFL I don’t know but there are a lot of people who feel the need to justify why our players dont get credit.

The getting in and out of breaks is also Butler's big problem, more than his hands. All of us can see how differently Butler and Lazard were used at ISU. Butler was a down the field threat, in part because of his speed but also because of his inability to do much of anything else. Lazard was the far more rounded receiver.

The other thing going here is that Butler hasn't had a lot of time to develop and I'm not sure how much, if at all, he was allowed to practice with the team after being put on injured reserve. Difficult situation to be put in when you've got a rookie coach and a deep position group ahead of you.

That said, Arizona has a pretty terrible recent history of bringing in expensive veterans who don't pan out while watching younger guys they release go on to be successful for other teams. Here are a few examples from this last offseason:

Cardinals signed Michael Crabtree last year, paid him over $2 million and proceeded to cut him a few weeks into the season. Terrell Suggs signed a 1-year, $7 million contract and then asked to be released during the season so he could "play for a winner." They cut Josh Bynes, one of their better defenders who was in his first year of a new deal but coming off an injury, and watched him do pretty well for Baltimore (Bynes certainly outperformed the guy that replaced him in Arizona).

I get the impression that their front office/GM is getting nervous and in need of some immediate success. They have had success in the past bringing in vets when they had an experienced NFL coach in Bruce Arians at the time. The Cardinals may have been Bruce's first full-time head coaching job, but he was named the NFL coach of the year with the colts as an interim and had won a super bowl as a high-level coordinator a few years prior. Even then, I don't think they had a sustainable culture/development strategy as they fell off from their super bowl year pretty quickly. I really just don't think prioritizing veteran free agent signings will work well with a coach that is completely new to the NFL who wasn't all that successful even as a college coach.

Reading between the lines of everything from his Cyclone days to now, it seems like Butler's work ethic is less than ideal, and I'll be surprised if he's still in the NFL three years from now. Campbell alluded to as much many times. Still, I'd buy Butler a drink any time and I wish him the best.

Pretty sure Butler was lucky to be put on the IR last year instead of being cut
He was dropping balls in practice, so they basically gave him a redshirt to see if getting the hand healthy would make a difference

He had the most drops in the nation with us, and the pros have no place for someone that does

Lazard also is an excellent blocking Wr. He was in plenty of highlights of good Packers running plays due to his blocks. Another value that will keep a player in the league

If you made up a team of disrespected/underappreciated Cyclones in the NFL they'd still be 0-fer against the Browns worst team...

I agree that there is some of that problem with Butler but people said the same thing about Lazard. Besides Butler hasn’t really gotten any opportunity to show anything since he got hurt last year. It is absolutely fair to say that our guys seem to have a tougher time of breaking through.

And Lazard bounced around the NFL a little bit until 1. he got consistent catching the routine passes, and 2. Aaron Rodgers took a liking to him. If Butler wants to stick on an NFL roster he’s going to have to do the same thing.

As a Cardinals fan, seflishly, this really sucks. But I know he get picked up somewhere. Maybe AZ puts him on practice squad (I hope).

Or I would love him in Jacksonville (my other team).

Just browsing twitter, lots of Jets and Giants fan seem to want him. Hopefully he lands somewhere.

Where did you get that from? I had the opposite impression . . . (not that I know any insider info)
