I hope all of the football players are kept in a bubble, given online learning and support they need and are given the opportunity to play football. I can't imagine the amount of work they have put in for YEARS to have their peers around them be so selfish and self-centered to potentially end the football season. No excuses about "these are 18yrs olds what do you expect" - my 4 yr old grandson and tell you that you need to be careful and not be around people because of the virus.

I've just assumed that classes would all be online only for the football players, but maybe that's not true.

If players are allowed any contact with any other students on campus.... football will not be around long.

On some level i don't even blame the college students.

They were the first ones hit by this back in march while school got cancelled. Meanwhile, this whole situation was prolonged in large part due to people refusing to do what it took to knock this down like other countries did. So their lost spring semester was wasted. Meanwhile, theyve watched other groups, groups that lean heavily towards more at-risk groups, be the leaders at ******** every step of the way about the shutdowns, the masks, etc. Furthermore, these students likely have little other outlet for social life. They don't own their own homes, they don't have their own families, etc. So theyve probably tended to be more isolated during the quarantine period than other age groups. So at some point they have to think "well if the boomers arent going to give a damn about it, and my individual risk is low, why should I waste my youth to save them?"

This might be the dumbest take so far on this site and there has been quite a few up there with this. Im not even sure where to start to break it down.

College kids arent part of a family? Harder hit then single parents trying to pay rent?

Come on. Do you really believe that the coronavirus problem in the US is just because we’re counting deaths inaccurately? How many Americans do you think have died that just “happen to have COVID-19” but died from something else?

I can’t speak for other states, but that was the case in Illinois. Who knows if those deaths were eventually taken away from the Covid death count or how many deaths were reported that way but here is the Director of Illinois Dept of Public Health explaining it.

Is it a whole lot different than at home for this age? I know many around here were still having parties, going to bars, going to local concerts. A couple counties had fairs in the area. Daughter hit one of their events and said it was very full. Been keeping an eye on that county’s number since it was 2-3 weeks ago. I don’t know of many college aged kids that just say at home this summer.

Those models were the “do nothing” projections over like two years if we did not make any changes at all. Surely everyone here is sharp enough to understand that we made major changes as a society to help reduce the spread of this.

Right? Because your post left me wondering.

I don't remember it being over two years' time, but FWIW if in fact we don't get a vaccine/treatment rolled out efficiently or it doesn't weaken by my count we're looking at just under 1 millionish over two years' time at our current pace.

We'll be at 300,000 by December unless it slows way down.

I don’t understand what people expected, by sending students back you are accepting the virus is going to spread throughout campus until it burns out. That’s just reality and that’s what will happen, there is going to be a spike of college kids that get it.

If we set expectations to zero, we will only ever get zero. If we set expectations higher and actually start preparing 18-22 year olds for the real world - and a pandemic sounds like a great time to start - maybe more would actually be able to make it successfully on their own.

If my 9 year old can ride through Ames with his grandparents like yesterday and come home complaining about seeing “so many stupid people without masks, like 95% of them”, I’m thinking we could raise the bar a bit for those twice his age.
