Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

It is truly astounding to me that the national prospectus for Iowa is this high. They will be decent, maybe even good. But I just can't see a Fran coached team making a Final 4 run, let alone compete for a Big 10 title

I don't think they can even make the Sweet 16 honestly

If the cheating refs dont call their games, I have high hopes for them.

Not Sweet 16 but if they dont get to a Final Four or if they have a bad Elite 8 loss it's a failure.

So all of Hoiberg's teams and the first two years of Prohm were failures? They couldn't get past the sweet 16.

My lazy take on Iowa last year was that Garza was the man no denying it and you had some decent role players around him that he made better. Teams couldn't seem to figure out Garza and it left others open a lot of the time and credit to them they were able to hit shots (especially against ISU).

Wonder if next year Garza can do the same. If people figure out how to shut or slow him down, I don't think Iowa will be as good as the accolades they're getting right now.

Which ones were predicted to be final four teams? IIRC only his last team was even predicted to be a top 4 Big 12 team.

ISU spent time in the top 10 3 years in a row from '13-'16 and never made it past the sweet 16. ISU was pre season #7 in 2015. Many people had ISU in the final 4 the year they lost to that small Bama school, including Jon Miller.

I mean according to ISU fans these were all disappointing years then. That isn't even talking about the fact that winning 4 Big12 conference tournament titles with ZERO elite 8 appearance is crushingly disappointing and underachieving on an epic level. I mean I'm told these conference tournament titles are the most elite of accomplishments, yet ISU can't get past the sweet 16 at all?

You're talking to a small majority apparently. Most fans I know consider those years as a great portion of ISU bball.

To me it's all about matchups and getting a little luck on your side when it comes to March....or just be a blueblood and reload with 5 star players all the time.

Georges breaking his foot was brutal luck honestly

We were the hottest team in the nation at that point. Even without Georges, we beat North Carolina. Granted they were a 6 seed that year, but it's still freaking UNC. Let that sink in.

Disappointing NCAA tournament runs? Sure. Disappointing seasons? No. It's incredibly hilarious that you're even speaking on the fact that we made "ZERO elite 8 appearances" and that's "crushingly disappointing and underachieving on an epic level", when the team you root for hasn't made a Sweet 16 in over 20 years. There are kids currently on the Iowa roster that have zero recollection of a great Iowa basketball team. Also, your entire fanbase was ranting and raving about how good the team was just last year and yet the team finished #25 in the nation and was on a spiral to end the season.

Since the year 2000 the list of accomplishments for Iowa State is pretty good all things considered. The list of accomplishments for Iowa on the other hand would be pretty meh, and towards the top of the list of those accomplishments would be beating Iowa State on their home floor.

During their worst season in over 40 years

I’m responding to ISU fans claiming that making an elite 8 for Iowa this year would be disappointing, which is a crazy stupid thing to say. So it looks like my post clearly illustrated how stupid that thinking is using ISU as the example.

You again must be talking to a minority for ISU fans. Outside of bluebloods or being a 1 seed, I think almost any team should be thrilled to get to the Sweet 16 or greater.

If Iowa makes the Elite 8 next year that will not be disappointing. I don't care what they were rated to start the year, because the rankings are so fluid and college basketball is so up and down. The only way I would say it would be disappointing I guess would be if Iowa had 1 or 2 losses to end the regular season. They'd be a favorite for the title, and anything less than a final 4 trip would be disappointing. It would not, however, be a failure of a season. The tournament is a crap shoot.
