Kirk Ferentz getting sued for being racist

Press conference (my guess):

1) Doyle has resigned. A secretive buyout package was negotiated this past week. Their son is in the transfer portal. Done.

2) Kirk will apologize for past conduct and announce 1) staff training 2) accountability program including past and current players.

3) Brian's name will Not be mentioned today. Kirk will protect him.

4) Barta will not come near this press conference. His past mistakes / lawsuits would make his presence awkward and wrong. He will hide behind Kirk.

5) Kirk will apologize again to end the conference with some tears and emotions.
---------------------------------------------------------------

What will happen going forward:

1) Nothing. Kirk has known exactly what his staff has been doing the past 21 years. He knows what it takes to keep the Iowa football money machine going (8-5 or 9-4 seasons).

2) Time and winning football games will soften these issues and we will forget all about the racial problems at Iowa football. Just like Penn State...almighty hawkeye football trumps morals and integrity.

3) Kirk will announce retirement in December. Brian will not be considered. Barta will give Kirk a large final payment in his role to keep Iowa football moving forward.

You'd love that wouldn't you? .

I would love it, if it causes the U of I to actually take real action to clean things up. To me, it feels like anything short of an existential threat to the program/university, they are gonna try to sweep all this under the rug. And I don't think that is acceptable.

You'd love that wouldn't you? Lot's of folks here would love nothing more than to see the Iowa football program burnt to the ground. To the contrary, most of the players that have spoken out and have been directly affected by all of this want just the opposite. They want change and transparency but they don't want the program destroyed. They want it to use this opportunity to be better. I haven't read everything that has been put out there by former players but that is the overall feeling I get from what I have read.

I agree with this general sentiment, which I think is obvious. However, two points of disagreement. First, I don't think players necessarily equate "the program" to having Ferentz at the helm. As hard as it would be to imagine after 20 years of KF, Hawkeye Football will exist and can be a good brand that former players can be proud of if they completely clean house.

Second, there's a lot of people hearing/reading what they want to hear, and some serious morphing of the story as people talk about this. That goes for fans and media. People are getting this idea that former players speaking out are advocating for Kirk to be retained. I haven't heard or seen everything, but very roughly I'd say you've got a couple advocating for cleaning house, a couple saying Kirk doesn't necessarily need to go, and all the rest just presenting their experiences, which includes direct implication of Kirk in some cases. That vast majority are not saying anything about Kirk staying or getting canned. Somehow that's morphed into former players aren't calling for KF to be fired, and they want their program to change, so Kirk should be retained.

Despite what the media and those die hard Kirk supporters think, players saying they want to make the program better are talking about Hawkeye Football, not Kirk Ferentz football.

I loved it when Baylor fired Briles and Penn State fired Paterno. Sorry I like justice I guess?

I’ll believe it when I see it. I could potentially see this being kirk’s last year, but I don’t think they’ll fire him less than three months before the season starts. Plus, who do they bring in? If Ferentz goes they certainly can’t bring in his son.
I don’t buy it either. If they announced “Kirk has scheduled a press conference at 2” I’d wonder if he was stepping down. But since a handful of players are being made available for the media I assume it’ll be another Kirk mea culpa (without actually acknowledging anything), then detailing what they’ll be doing going forward and I’d assume the players being made available will be the leaders of some sort of player led racial equality/inclusion committee.

Part of me wishes that Kirk comes out dressed like Warren Beatty in Bullworth to show how woke he is now and how he’s embraced African American culture over the last week.

That sounds all sounds pretty likely as far as today's press conference goes, however with the news that former players are getting legal council, this situation is just getting started.

Yeah well Iowa hasn't really been up front and honest about ANY situation EVER so I understand Howe's logic in not going to them first with all of that. Also, Rob didn't publish his opinions or use excerpts from DJK's statements and comment throughout the entire story. He simply gave DJK a platform to tell his story.

FIFY

The diehard hawkeye fans I know really believe Stoops is the next coach. Oklahoma is WAY EASIER to win and draw talent to than Iowa. I mean winning to get into the semi's, not just wins. Bobby also left abruptly from Okie, with several players that were getting into trouble. A guy who runs a loose program is not the guy to hire in this situation.

If Kirk has violated rules, I don't think it matters what the players want honestly. Former players are bringing in legal council, some are going to the ACLU and EEOC, I'm sure the NCAA will get involved too. This is not going to be as simple as Iowa's trying to make it in which they're forming a little council and that council will decide each person's fate.

Exactly.
I said it earlier, but it looks like Kirk tolerated and implicitly supported a hostile work environment. That's flatly illegal. If he worked for any normal business he would already have been fired for cause. Not a lawyer, but this is my experience.

If Iowa fires everybody now, it would reduce, but not eliminate, any liability to injured parties. They are seriously vulnerable. They paid $6M to two wronged employees for discrimination. Now they have maybe dozens of them? AFTER a previous incident of discrimination in the department? Big money involved, in the current climate?

When I said $500M lawsuit, I don't think that is an exaggeration. Any settlement would be smaller, but it's closer to 9 digits than 7, I think.

I agree long term, but if Kirk were to leave before the season started I could very easily see Stoops as an interim coach for a year.

I'd be shocked out of my shoes if Stoops ever comes back, anywhere. I think he took his millions and rode off into the sunset, DB Cooper style. Good for him.

This reminds me of Penn State fans defending Paterno. Creepy hawk fans.
https://www.brookings.edu/blog/brow...-tribalism-and-callousness-in-college-sports/

I posted this article yesterday, but it explains exactly what you're saying and shows how everyone associated with a team deals with these types of issues.

"The passions that stir up loyalties and rivalries also produce tribalism like the type infecting American politics. Enamored with the potential to win, fans avert their eyes from ugliness in their favorite programs and lash out at those who expose it. The result is that today’s premier college sports programs are largely composed of, and surrounded by, individuals with little incentive to uncover or address misconduct. And too often, those individuals have chosen to protect their programs before they protect victims of their programs’ abuse."

"Coaches. Coaches are hired and fired, and adored and despised, based on whether they win. They desperately want to keep unflattering stories from reaching newspapers and law enforcement, since these stories create distractions, keep players off the field, and threaten their own employment and reputations."

"Athletic directors and university administrators. Recent scandals have found athletic directors—and college presidents and trustees—complicit in covering up wrongdoing or unwilling to punish it. These cases have reflected a stunning lack of concern or backbone from university leaders."

"Local media. Most high-profile college sports programs today are covered, day in and day out, by local beat reporters. These reporters are paid to keep an ear to the ground near the programs they cover. However, they rely on these programs to provide access and information, and they report to an audience of partisans (fans) who can react angrily to negative coverage of their favorite programs. It was national reporters, not local reporters, who broke this year’s stories of problems at Ohio State, Michigan State, and Maryland, while some local reporters took aim at the national media."

No way that Stoops would take this job. He could have almost any job in college football if he wanted it. Stoops is not stupid and stepping into this mess would be a huge mistake.

Norvell at Nevada makes sense.

I see that that ANE site has posted some additional media phone numbers and quotes. I haven't seen it posted on social media much yet but see they've had around 1,250 hits in the past 24 hrs. Would be a shame for it to get mass traction before the press conference. https://americaneedsequality.com/

Just think, if the media, AD, UofI president, and/or BOR would have done their jobs after Rhabdo, 9 years worth of players wouldn't have had to endure poor treatment from St. Kirk and the Hok coaching staff.
