I guess it's a difference of opinion,not having to come back after New Yr is a pretty long break IMO. Seems like most the time anymore all you like to do is complain. I don't see any reason not to post a difference of an opinion on a minor subject like this but to each their own.

I didn't post anything about the length of the break, so that was irrelevant and kinda rude.
What I'm mentioning here is the very real pressure that a lot of parents will be placing on students to get back for Thanksgiving day. It's going to be a big deal for a bunch of students, sometimes involving tickets already purchased for them and whatever.
So, my hope there was that the uni will be flexible with those concerns and allow those students to take the final early, which is an awfully decent thing to do.
But hey, complain away, bro.
At this point my daughter will be thrilled with whatever, as long as she gets to be back on campus. She's missing it.
I believe when classes are out of session, teams no longer face practice time restrictions.
That would be a big benefit for football team bowl prep. Will be curious if NCAA steps in to create a level practice allowance if some schools continue their semester/quarter after T-giving.
It will also be interesting if basketball programs push some November non-con games to December when players don't have school.
If the vast majority of schools don't have December classes, maybe the NCAA will push back the basketball season start until mid-November. Then encourage teams to play through Christmas to keep players on campus.

Have you seen the book "Academically Adrift?" It documents the deal that undergraduate students and faculty have with each other. "Let's not make each work have to work too hard."
It got a bunch of attention a few years ago, but alas, not much has changed in this regard. In fact, it has gotten more visible during the 'Rona crisis.

No, but I would imagine this one (which I have read) has a similar message...
it is a really ****** and over bearing parent that pushes their adult child to be at their house certain times. These parents might need to realize that you can celebrate on days other than the holiday.
And I would hope that parents realize their kids will not be at school, therefore could be at home, for three holidays in a row: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years.
I think the world will continue to be in a state of "what now" and "what next" and "why/why not?" for a long time. Expectations may remain, but practical actions will determine what happens and when.
Going to have a freshman up their this year.......and she is absolutely under no pressure to come home. This is college not junior high. And I think most parents of college age adults think this way. Sometimes family holiday festivities get moved to another day......just like the blowing out of birthday candles when life gets in the way.

Academically Adrift includes some stunning research about how little work undergraduate students and faculty do.
I already ordered it! I have a shelf full of books that look at education beyond the schooling paradigm.
I think there will be less pressure for them to get home with their classes being finished before Thanksgiving. Will just make people have T-giving on either friday or saturday if they get home late or thanksgiving day.
This, when I went to ISU, we got five weeks off for Winter break. I blew chunks. Only college/University that did. You had Christmas and NY to be with family and friends and then a couple weeks of pounding the pud waiting for classes to start bored out of your mind. Internet wasn't a thing back then and neither was cell phones so it got to be way too long. Many of us pushed to shorten the break at least a week.
