Kirk Ferentz getting sued for being racist

Can someone highlight specific instances that incriminate Ferentz? I ask because I guess I’m not really seeing cause for him to be gone. Maybe I’m just being cynical but I think throughout sports and other industries we are going to see some awful stuff come out over the next months. Active racism should cause people to lose their jobs but I fear if we get to far into who has tolerated crap we won’t have anyone left.

I think we have all tolerated stuff that is unacceptable. We all have to strive to be better. That includes Iowa State. I just fear that we are going to be in for a rude awakening of how prevalent stuff is.

He's been there for a couple decades. It is his job, a job he receives millions of dollars to do, to be aware of this kind of thing, and to create an environment where when this thing comes up his players feel like they can come to him about those issues. Some players have indicated that environment did not exist or he actively brushed off reports.

That didn’t in any way address the point I made. I think we’ve all tolerated hateful behavior that we frankly shouldn’t have in our lives. I know I have. I’m ashamed I haven’t always had the courage to call it out. It is an uncomfortable issue. I think if we hold everyone responsible for failures to do enough we won’t have anyone left.
Like I said maybe I’m just being cynical but I think this is extremely pervasive in our society.

Major college football coaches have a huge impact on these kids, one that starts with the kid and his parents putting a ton of trust into the HC. He knew this was happening and was completely ineffective in dealing with it, and according to one account had direct knowledge of an incident and decided to punish the player for speaking out. Reading the accounts from the players it's clear it's part of the culture he's cultivated there, it's not just Doyle.

We are all in different roles. Everyone has to be responsible for the own actions but those in leadership positions, that are compensated and entrusted with overseeing an organization, are responsible for what goes on in that organization as a whole - explicitly or implicitly.

Put another way, someone in KF's position gets to enjoy all the spoils of his position when things are rosy - even though many others in that organization have a hand in that success. Our assumption is that he did the things to make it successful. If that is the case, then it works the same when the organization fails.

You are right, every organization is going to be under a microscope for a while. Those that have permitted (not just encouraged) a culture of racism to exist will see leadership changes of some type.
My point though is I am fearful most places have a culture that at least permitted some. Maybe Iowa is bad enough that he should go. I just don’t want to get to far in over our heads before we figure out how pervasive these issues are society wide. Hopefully this is a more isolated issue but I think we are going to hear similar stories most everywhere. I think this problem is a society wide one and not just isolated to Iowa Football.

I would worry less about the Ferentz's of the world and worry about everyone who's had to deal with their BS. I'm totally fine with getting rid of everyone in a position of power who sees this stuff happening and does nothing.

Why would the possibility of subtle racism being much more pervasive in society and sports than we realize prevent you from condemning the very blatant racism that you actually know occurred?

If the sheer number of athletes that have spoken out against Iowa starts getting matched at other schools I think your concerns are valid. Until then I think you can end the hand wringing.

There's just no way Kirk hadn't known about this until recently. Sadly, I think its going to take a video or audio recording in order for him to get fired. The "independent" council or whatever won't find enough evidence, Chris Doyle and his son will be the fall guys, and Kirk, Brian, and Barta will continue on like nothing has changed.

If all of Iowa State's black players came out against our program, that would make me sad, but I would know change would be required from the top down. It's troubling seeing so many Iowa fans take a stand against their former players.

An Iowa reporter talked to some of the players about whether they raised any of these concerns with Kirk, and they said absolutely not - he was not accessible in that manner, and outside of the regular season it is essentially Doyle that is (was) running the program. Setting aside the question of whether that is an effective way to run a program (I tend to think it isn’t), it’s not unrealistic to think that Kirk wouldn’t know about the comments Doyle was making. It’s not like Doyle himself is going to bring it up in conversation.
The coaches outside the S&C staff are extremely limited by the NCAA in how much they can interact with the team. S&C coaches are the lifeblood of any program and have to be in close contact with the HC all off-season. This isn't an Iowa thing, it's an NCAA thing. That being said, there is NO WAY KF didn't know who Doyle was as a person.

White people demand conformity.

I am sure there's more racism on college campuses than people realize. As a grad student when I TA'd for many professors, I had access to student assignments and course grades for the first time. Made me realize that professors were grading assignments from black students a bit more harshly compared to how they were grading similar quality work from white students.

I could see that...double down on "we will do better" and Doyle sits out a bit, etc.

If we are going to make this about a rivarly, I want CMC and our team to come out of tunnel early in Iowa City and kneel for the anthem. :)

Has anyone tagged Kutcher in any tweets?

That would blow things up this fall. (figuratively)

White people demand conformity.

I don't mean this in any way to defend the coaching staff, but football demands conformity. Team first, keep things in house, all that stuff is definitely a part of football culture. It's what led to a culture of ignoring injuries in the past and it's what has allowed this type of culture to persist at Iowa.

Now that said, I've always been somebody who thinks if you are a good motivator, actually good at your job, you shouldn't need to even resort to the screaming at people crap we see in coaching a lot especially for football. Obviously anything racial or personal like with the Kellenburger kid is way over the line.

Well channel 8 is reporting on it. Gonna get real today

I woke up and it's basically the top headline on CBSSports.com in my news feed. And I honestly didn't even hear about this until last night when my wife told me.

I'm just going to leave this here

Watching that video made me very proud of Iowa State, our athletic department, Campbell and our S&C program. The S&C program is the backbone of the football program and it is intimately managed on a minute by minute basis by Campbell. Coach Andrews and his whole staff, all the way down to Trevor Ryen, are very impressive individuals, we got us some winners there!

The one where the player called out Doyle in front of the team for telling him he'd send him back to the ghetto then was suspended by Ferentz and forced to apologize isn't a good look.

Edit:

Pretty tough to claim he didn't know anything.

It's obvious Doyle is the fall guy, daddy wont let Brian take heat.
