I was thinking of getting a Blu-ray player and someone mentoned getting a PS3 instead. I know you can play games and Blu-ray dvd's on a PS3, but can you play regular dvd's on a PS3? Does anyone know of any other pros or cons to either the PS3 or the Blu-ray. Thanks in advance.

You can play regular DVDs on the PS3 as well. I actually think its upscaler is better than my upscaling DVD player.
Honestly, for the money, the PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player you can get right now. I have no idea if you're a gamer or not, but if you are I would definitely go that route.

edit - also wait till the "holiday" season to roll around as i can see sony dropping the price to be able to say they dropped it just how the xbox did ...
If you're going to buy a blu-ray player anyways you should get the PS3, definitely. I don't care for the PS3 as far as gaming goes, but it's a really good blu-ray player, and you can play games on it.
Definately get the PS3 as a blu-ray player! I got mine mostly as a gaming system, but I also love watching blu-ray videos on it. If you get the ps3 for the blu-ray player, tell me you have a HDTV, and if you have a HDTV, tell me your going to have surround sound! Surround sound is where it gets awesome after the stellar picture from blu-ray...if you don't have it, invest in a good surround sound!
Only annoying thing about the ps3 is that the remote is blue tooth, not infrared. So if you have a universal remote, it won't work. They make a nice remote, it's just annoying to have to use a different one.
Would definitely agree with everyone. The PS3 is a great Blue-Ray player and yes you can watch regular DVD disks. If even upconverts it a little bit not as much as a blue-ray disk though but more than a regular dvd player. If you watch a lot of movies on it you may want to go with the remote control for it otherwise you can get around using the normal game console cotroller.
I read an article about a year ago that said that Sony lost money every time they sold a unit. The name of the game is sold units, and game development. So it's a great value.
I agree with everyone else. Go with the PS3. The upconvert on regular DVDs is awesome. Not as sharp as a Blu-Ray picture, but much better than a 480p signal. If you're not too technical, I'll put it this way; the movie fills the whole screen.
The gaming side of things is why I bought mine, but even if you can't see yourself spending $60 on a game there are dozens of arcade/nostalgia games available for download in the $10-15 range that are fun to pick up and play.
Sony is also supposed to be working on a movie download service to make the PS3 even more of a media machine. I don't know where they're at since I haven't heard about it lately, but it's an interesting possibility.

You can buy a USB infared adapter that will work with universal remotes. Just have to give up one of your USB ports on the ps3.
