Iowa State did wear that shade of gold up until 1967 when Johnny Majors arrived. The next (and best ) shade of gold was worn by ISU from 1967-1983. I call it "sunflower" gold because i don't know what it is. The current shade came with Jim Criner (along with that stupid tornado that Johnny Orr never used) in 1983 along with a fire engine red.

Thanks for this! This sounds about right. I'm assuming we more or less kept the same shade of gold from '67-'83, even though the uni kept changing, it seemed every 2-3 years, during that time (and after).

That's a good name for it, sunflower gold. Did you coin that or someone else? I like it. Yes sunflower gold = 76 gold (my term), even though I'm sure I didn't quite get the shade right on my pics. And I agree, that sunflower gold, I also think was our best shade of gold to date.

When was that Throwback 76 uniform again (against Iowa)? I'm thinking around 2007 or so but I could be way off.

Getting a bit picky here, I think he can see it.

Actually the gold appears even darker due to the sun or angle of that pic. If you want to be picky, maybe try this:

Just think about how F'ed up our marketing department must have been throughout some of those years.

We actually went from something as sweet as this.....

to eventually something as bad as this.....

And the helmet change was probably as bad or worse unbelievably.

I would prefer our colors to be what is in the Trice throwback below. That would be sick.....

@clonedude, I would hope not to get in a pissing contest on which shade of gold to use or was used. Point is the historical gold we had from around '67 to '83 is what I'm talking about and what I wish we we might consider again adding. That's all. The exact shade doesn't really matter at this point, viewed on a computer screen. There was even variations in that shade of gold during that time period, I'm pretty sure.

Let's just look at '82 here, David Archer, I believe:

Amateur Photoshopping here, but is this closer to the "sunflower" gold? Also added cardinal socks (admittedly sloppy and a bit to fire-engine-ish, if someone could do a better one with those socks instead of gold, I'd like to see the full unit).

I'm not talking about the quality of the uniform, or even the design, but just the colors, with the white included, the awesome cardinal and gold socks, but change the shoes to cardinal w/ gold swoosh as well. That would be perfect IMO. I would love to see our current logo mocked up with these colors.

I can't disagree, that '67-'82 ('82 really, not 1983 color change to current gold and fire-red cardinal) gold was pretty good. Why did we ever change it so dramatically?

Roger that. Every one has their opinion. Both are good. I think the throwbacks get a little darker shade than I might prefer, and think might make a possible return.

That's what I'm really hoping is for is a possible return to something close to that type of gold we've had in the past. Now the Stapleton era gold is another story, haha.

That's something I didn't realize ... easy assumption thinking it was (ahem) a uniform look throughout that season .. that was at the early stages of my following of ISU football, so I probably paid the most attention to the Iowa and Peach Bowl uniforms.

So they went to that look as the main design in '78, though?

Yeah- it looked good. So did the home version of that set
