MLB considering radical realignment for 2020 season: Grapefruit and Cactus leagues

Major League Baseball, assessing a myriad of proposals, has discussed a radical plan that would eliminate the traditional American and National Leagues for 2020, a high-ranking official told USA TODAY Sports, and realign all six divisions for an abbreviated season.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the proposal is one of several being discussed.

The plan would have all 30 teams returning to their spring-training sites in Florida and Arizona, playing regular-season games only in those two states and without fans in an effort to reduce travel and minimize risks in the midst of the COVD-19 pandemic.

The divisions would be realigned based on the geography of their spring-training homes.

Here's a look at one realignment structure:

GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE

  • NORTH: New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • SOUTH: Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles.
  • EAST: Washington Nationals, Houston Astros, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins.

CACTUS LEAGUE

  • NORTHEAST: Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Oakland A’s.
  • WEST: Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels.
  • NORTHWEST: Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals.

Has anyone heard any more heat behind this idea? I really don't like it, at all. BUT I like it a hell of a lot better than not having a season. They better let my Fox Sports North crew in there so I can at least watch the Twins.

It makes a bunch of sense. The teams already have facilities there. They can play the games in the morning like they do with the Rookie leagues. Let the “home” team choose the DH rule to use.

I do think it makes sense. It just sucks that it’s come to that

Threw in the towel and cancelled my MLB subscription. Took a little talking with whatshername in India or Pakistan to get it done but will get a refund.

I did this as well. I figured when/if the season does come back there’s gonna be some awesome deal on it for new subscribers.

Also, I didn’t know I actually had a subscription. I thought I just paid for last year through a deal they had around Father’s Day. Glad I caught it before I dropped $150 or whatever it was

Can't decide if that's a change-up, knuckleball, or some sort of flat ephus pitch.

Tough call. I think its some sort of anti-gravity or anti-friction pitch. Looks like a change up considering the windup and speed but it's spinning forward like a curve but not curving or sinking!

It's those darn automatic resubscribe things. Killing my CY.TV this winter before they did that to me again considering it's going ESPN+ next year for the most part.

I agree. Also I just appreciate anyone knowing the term ephus pitch.

I don't always trust Nigtehgale's reporting but here is the latest possible scenario to start the season:

Here's a look at the possible realignment structure:

EAST

  • New York Yankees and Mets, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins
WEST

  • Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners
CENTRAL

  • Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers

Is anyone going to up watching the KBO on ESPN in the middle of the night?

A pretty decent write-up on the baseball draft going to only 5 rounds. Down from like 40 possible rounds. Latest in cost cutting measures and I had totally missed this news from a couple of days ago. Written from a Twins perspective but still pretty informative.

Huge implications to since the signing bonuses outside the five rounds as free agents will be capped at $20k. Won't be any bidding wars, more like recruiting wars and selling your organization. And, if it's a SEC bound player the MLB teams will be outbid.

Another bullet for contracting the minors I'm afraid.
