Iowa Football Recruiting

That's what I'd say too if my team got shut out of the instate top 10. Can you imagine if the Clones landed 7 of them? You'd be beside yourself. LOL Hard to believe Campbell wouldn't make instate recruiting more of a priority. JP on board with this strategy?

I've literally said that about basketball and football recruiting for a decade. It has nothing to do with the class of 2021

You may be right about 1 thing. If you get out recruited that bad in state it would make sense that the other teams players would care more about the rivalry game.

I really don’t care where they come from either, but give me the low hanging fruit as opposed to battling for kids nationwide. Much easier to land local kids than it is across the nation. Give me the wirfs, scherffs, hockensons and dwights of the world. I’m glad if Campbell doesn’t want to make recruiting Iowa a priority.

It’s a lot harder to get highly ranked recruits from out of state. It’s going to be difficult for Iowa State to sustain success if they aren’t competitive in state.

I think we should also take into consideration that even though Iowa State is night and day better than they have been in recent history, Iowa is still "the football program" in the state. I'm not taking anything away from what Campbell and co. have done, and he definitely is getting better players to come here from out of state and from the state of Iowa, but it's not unthinkable why Iowa is doing better at getting players from our home state.

This trend will not flip until one of two things happen.. Campbell beats Iowa a couple of years in a row and goes on to have good years, or, Ferentz leaves and recruits are a bit reluctant to go to Iowa right away until the next coach can prove himself.

Campbell has had to walk before he can run as far as recruiting in the state goes. You don't waltz into a horrific football program and in three years out-recruit a great coach and solid football program, especially considering Iowa has been very solid the past 5 years.

Campbell has been near perfect in changing the face of the Iowa State program and if Iowa would've had a bad year or two during this time, it's very possible Campbell would have a firm grasp on recruiting this state. That's not the case though.

I give a hard disagree here.

ISU has had success in the Campbell era with recruits from about anywhere, and those they’ve gotten from in-state have contributed nicely.

Its only been 3 years. Thus far Campbell has been able to sell the progress the program has made to out of state recruits, but if they can’t get over the hump that excitement is going to wane.

If Iowa State isn’t competitive in state, they’re going to consistently have recruiting classes ranked in the high 40’s and 50’s. At that point, you are relying heavily on developing recruits. Campbell has done a good job with that so far, but all it takes is missing on one class of guys to find yourself in a precarious situation.

This is quite a reach

What is “getting over the hump”? Even if they continue winning 7 or 8 games a year, the “excitement” won’t go anywhere. That is consistently winning.

Campbell isn’t going to miss on an entire class of recruits, get a grip.

Iowa State is going to continue to have success with classes in the 40’s and 50’s. Quite honestly, getting more in-state recruits would hardly move the needle in that regard.

Your post is a far fetched reach.

If you think a program in the state of Iowa is going to maintain consistent success by recruiting almost exclusively out of state and borderline (in terms of P5 talent) in-state guys, best of luck to you.

We recruit well out of state though

Yeah... Since they totally haven’t done exactly what you are claiming they can’t.

Knipfel, Downing, Newell, Hummel, Petersen... “borderline P5 talent”.

This is a really bad reach, sorry.

Players recognized by the Big 12 on the first, second or HM team from Iowa State

In state - 4
Out of state - 17

Yes, all of those guys except Downing were borderline P5 recruits. You’re making my point for me. If you think Iowa State is going to be able to consistently take an entire class full of guys like that (other than maybe 1-3 guys per class that are highly sought after by other Top 25-ish programs) and turn them into high level P5 performers, best of luck. It’s entirely possible, but it’s going to be really difficult.
