wrestle-offs

I am almost positive they are November 7 and I would guess they will be at the Lied rec center again this year. I'll try to find out and post the time and place unless someone else knows for sure.

I was just down there and they have one bigger sized bleacher on the west end and then the smaller ones they use for track meets around the other three sides. I don't think they used that big one last year so they will have more seats available tonight.

I guess at the end they're going to have a drawing and the winner gets to wrestle Big Z in an exhibition. If you can beat him you win two season tickets!!

125: Clark/Long: Clark won. Long is going to be very very good. Clark out muscled the true freshman. Long out 'quicked' him and is more fundamentally sound.

133: Fanthorpe/Valles: Fanthorpe won. Valles gave it his all. Fanthorpe looked good, quick and ready. Fast paced match.

141: Gallick/Jensen: Gallick seemed to play with Jensen. Another fast paced match. I think Gallick tech falled him. Was hopping for a pin here... didn't see it.

149: Mueller/Hale: Hale was out matched from the beginning. Mueller was quick and ready for the match.

157: Sanderson/Brown: Brown came out swinging about caught Cyler a couple of times (like we saw last year), but Cyler would push him off... This is Cylers year.

165: Reader/Carr Jr.: Was expecting a lot out of this match. Reader..was... well Reader. tech falled him or pinned him, can't remember. Carr doesn't have offense, but did a decent job on his back (not a good thing to be known for) Carr is really strong. But Reader man handled him. Impressive. No runner up this year.

174: Pursel/Finch: yawn. I sure a hell hope we have another option... these two are both pin material.

184: Curran was pissed and confused as to why he lost to Ward. Not sure on how good Ward will be .... but could be decent.

197: Varner/Simonson: Tech fall by Varner? or a pin, can't remember. Varner looked good. Simonson is good wrestle room practice for Varner.

HWT: Zabriskie/Thompson: besides being pinned twice (ref was WAY out of position) Thompson is strong and decent as a true freshman. Zabriskie will make it this year.

okay... so I didn't take great notes on the results ... it was a lot of fun watching the guys go at it..... still the impression is we are more aggressive in key weights than last year.

141 – Nick Gallick dec. Dalton Jensen, 2-1

This is from Cyclones.com. Seems to conflict with what you saw. I hope their score was wrong or Jensen is really good.

It's hard to score on someone that you wrestle in practice everyday.

I was talking with someone who was going to the wretle-offs this evening and I think he told me that the 174 pounder is a little banged up right now:

I agree. You know exactly what they do, and they know exactly what you do....meaning tough to score points. Gallick obviously the better wrestler, but when you wrestle someone everyday you learn their tendencies, and how to defend them.

Glad wrestling season is here again. I love football but there is nothin that is more intense than a full house at a wrestling meet. Will be glad to walk through the Hilton doors again.

The Reader/Carr result is pretty interesting . . . if I remember correctly, that is a much bigger beating than he put on Carr at Midlands last year.

Long being a true freshman, it seems like he could become the best option at some point later in the season. Do they have mid-season wrestle-offs if two wrestlers are close?

Reader beat a different Iowa Central national champ, Colby Covington, at the Midlands last year by a wide margin. Covington is now in Iowa City and has already acclimated himself to the city as he made the police blotter a few months back.

My intuition is that Long will keep his redshirt this year and wrestle 125 next year while Clark redshirts. Then one of them can move up to fill Fanthorpe's spot once he graduates.
