What about services like plumbing/appliance, or auto repair? I think those have to be allowed to operate because people can come across massive hardships and health risks without them.

I think once you eliminate congregational or group recreation type things (gyms, theaters, bars, malls, carry-out-only for restaurants, etc) you can't do a straight up shut down here without causing more harm than the risk the virus presents. We rely so much on a myriad of services that are necessary to keep our standard of health and functionality going, that it's tough to just draw a line in the sand once you get past things that have truly non-essential functions (like the ones I listed) in our society.
Everyone is going to have to deal with hardships of varying degrees. Somewhere the line has to be drawn between essential and non-essential. I'm glad I don't have to draw it.

I agree "non-essential" is a relative term. I just don't think there is a way to broadly define it. They are right to prohibit gatherings of 50 or more, and I'm not sure how much more you can do beyond that.

It's clear the most pressing concern is keeping large groups from gathering together. But mandating the closure of something like a plumbing business could likely cause more problems than it solves given their small-scale interaction with others.

And the reality that the work they do is often essential to allow people to remain healthily in their homes.

Same with an appliance store/repair business. Being able to wash your clothes at homes keeps you A) at home, and B) operating at a higher level of general hygeine.

true. And I don’t think those things will close down. We need to shut restaurants, bars, movie theatres, etc.

Yeah, I think almost everyone agrees with that.

Carry out-only for restaurants seems to be the current protocol, and that seems pretty safe to me. The risk is having a bunch of people inside a confined space putting their mouths on stuff.

Currently I've worked up a home schooling schedule for our kids with lots of apps and stuff for while we're working from home/home from school. There are SO many resources - it's one of the benefits of living in 2020 vs when we were kids.

We are fairly well connected in DC with several lobbying groups through our work and it looks like Trump and congress are considering a two week mandatory shut down/quarantine for all non-essential businesses at a national level. Got an email with the draft language of what it looks like...wow.

Does this mean most of us give up the wfh deal? I'm ok with that.and yeah, I heard similar this morning.it sounded like the CDC wants it and needs to get trump convinced to do it.

Anything about interstate travel?

Just curious for anyone thats been to a grocery store the last few days. I know frozen foods and soups are probably gone. But how is the inventory with fresh foods like fruits and veggies? Or eggs? I haven't been to a grocery store for a while so just want to get an idea of the situation. (In Ames)

Where are you located? I live in Ankeny and honestly haven't seen too much missing from shelves aside from TP.

The produce doesn't seem hit hard from the couple I have been to. It is mostly soups, tomatoes, frozen foods, and other items that can be stored.
