Coronavirus Coronavirus: In-Iowa General Discussion (Not Limited)

Don't hold me to this but I have heard a rumor that those people in Johnson county aren't even residents there but were re-located for treatment after they were off-boarded from that cruise. Either way so far Iowa has avoided community spread of the virus and it's all been tied to the same trip. If a case in the DM Metro area pops up that is not tied to international travel that will surely change things drastically around here.

Just saw that Norwalk is not canceling classes after spring break quite yet so that gives me hope that not everyone will over-react but it's obviously a very fluid situation right now

That is nuts if true because it has been painted that they are Iowa residents. If they are non-residents, Iowa would only have 1 confirmed Iowa resident case for that person that went to California.

Hence why I prefaced it by saying it was just a rumor I heard. The privacy issues really restrict us from knowing too much about the specifics with these cases. Omaha got some of the infected cruise patients so it's not too far fetched to think the IC hospital may have gotten some from another cruise but the 1 case in Carroll county is also tied to that same cruise so who knows if it's just all 1 group of family and friends.

At this time it looks like only DMPS is cancelling post spring break. Email below from Urbandale Superintendent.

Urbandale CSD Families and Staff,

In light of recent university and public school closures, central Iowa school district leaders met Friday, March 13, to collaborate and develop a consistent message for our broader communities. Representatives from the Governor’s Office and other educational agencies were also present. At this time, we believe it is in the best interest of our families and staff to resume school as planned after spring break.

Student and staff safety remains our top priority. We all look to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) for their expertise and direction. IDPH currently believes the risk to our student and staff population is low. We also acknowledge many of our families rely on district-provided childcare and nutritional resources.

We will continue to partner with IDPH and follow their standard protocol for reportable illnesses. This may result in a need to close a specific building, district, or region of schools. IDPH will be the primary source for how we make our decisions regarding COVID-19.

In addition to IDPH, we are in continuous communication with the Polk County Health Department (PCHD) and the Iowa Department of Education (IDE). Central Iowa school districts will continue to follow the guidance of these agencies and work together to keep students, families, and staff safe and informed.

Resources
Where you get your information about this virus is important. Look for information from reliable and trusted experts. Social media posts often report partial or inaccurate information.

What You Can Do To Help
Families and community members can help by following these simple, easy steps that help prevent the spread of ALL contagious viruses, including COVID-19. Practice the same routine hygiene used to help prevent the cold and flu.

  • Frequently wash your hands for 20 seconds or more with soapy water. If unavailable, use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
Thank you to our students, families, and staff for your patience and support as we partner together to keep our community healthy and safe. As a reminder, there is no school today, Friday, March 13, as today is the first day of Spring Break in the Urbandale Community School District. Spring Break is scheduled through Friday, March 20. We look forward to welcoming all students and staff back to school on Monday, March 23, 2020.

I wish you and your family an enjoyable, safe, and healthy Spring Break.

Sincerely,

Steve Bass
Superintendent

Well, for starters the flu has a fatality rate of .01%. CDC says the mortality rate for corona virus is 3.4%, which is probably too high. Most experts feel the actual number is 1%. Even the most optimistic people think it is way higher than .01%.

If you really haven't been paying attention than read up on what is happening in Italy. It's really scary sh!t. 15,000 confirmed cases, 2000 of which have recovered and 1000 have died. The number of infected increased by 24% and Deaths increased by 30% in the last day and they are probably only going to continue to climb. Their hospitals are totally full and more and more people are needing hospitalized and they don't know where to put them. Their death rate is going to skyrocket because their health system is completely overloaded and they can't treat the sick that are coming in.

The Italians were very resistant to closing down events and practicing social distancing and now it has blown up in their faces. That's why everyone has started to freak out in the last few days.

I would be interested in how many of these deaths are the elderly. This looks like something that, if it got in a nursing home, it would take out half of the population. Last update I saw there were more deaths in the US from one nursing home than the rest of the country.

Talking with my sister today, they still don't know how the contagion STARTED in that nursing home....what the original source was for the outbreak.

Odds the suburban schools change their plans within the next week? Decision seems odd considering the way everything else is trending.

I think it's highly likely. Considering there are now 16 states that have closed all schools, I can't imagine we'll be too hesitant.

Per Reynolds' address this afternooon, there is no person to person contagion in Iowa, therefore NO statewide school closings. At least that's what I think I just heard on the news...

I hope that's true. Unfortunately we have to wait until someone is seriously Ill with it to get them tested and by that point you've got 100's of cases or more in the community.

maybe someone should ask her how many we’ve tested.

That's really weird, since they have been able to trace so many cases. Of course someone that contaminated a nursing home were 24 people died would be in hiding about now.

I think that rumor can be squashed. According to this Register article, they believe the Egyptian Cruise was a trip arranged by Hills Bank of Iowa City and they traveled around the same time when the 15 confirmed Iowa cases got infected. Hills Bank couldn't confirm (nor deny) that this trip has anything to do with the confirmed cases. Hmm..

I'll say this and the non-travel case in northern CA is when I started to think we were in real trouble. Those residents weren't traveling which means it came in from someone else and we had no idea how it got there. Meaning it's already well within communities at that point. Plus they only got tested when people started breaking rules.
