Hit up the ankeny target for household supplies I’m low on.

For a weekday night, a little busier but not outrageous

Almost out of paper towels. Low on tissues. Completely out of store brand Tylenol (I got a pack of the brand name which will obviously work)

Low on TP and out of hand soap (didn’t need either)

This virus has a long way to go before there's any statistics that would prove all of this isn't a dramatic over reaction. Can the virus even be considered lethal at this point? Like .01% of people infected die.
Wow, I've seem some misinformed people on here but you take the prize!

I won't even argue with that. I am misinformed. There's 100x more panic and hysteria being shared on social media/Twitter/national news that it makes finding an actual statistic hard to do. Could you share some? Everything I've seen shows extremely remote odds to catching anything let alone dying.

The north Fareway in Ames has had toilet paper every day I have been there this week. Target was totally out as of 4pm today. I was returning something to customer service and she got a call presumably asking about toilet paper. She said that was the 5th call in 2hrs. I picked up Kleenex which we needed, allergy meds, and a few cold meds. We have 5 females in our household of 6, I am hoping we have enough TP. I think we should be good with food for the most part. There wasn’t anything totally gone at Fareway that people may be stocking up on, although I have not seen Clorox wipes anywhere for at least the past week.

I am sure glad we took our big Disney trip last year! Both Disneyland and WDW are closing this weekend until the end of the month. I know one family who just left today to go to WDW.

Well, for starters the flu has a fatality rate of .01%. CDC says the mortality rate for corona virus is 3.4%, which is probably too high. Most experts feel the actual number is 1%. Even the most optimistic people think it is way higher than .01%.

If you really haven't been paying attention than read up on what is happening in Italy. It's really scary sh!t. 15,000 confirmed cases, 2000 of which have recovered and 1000 have died. The number of infected increased by 24% and Deaths increased by 30% in the last day and they are probably only going to continue to climb. Their hospitals are totally full and more and more people are needing hospitalized and they don't know where to put them. Their death rate is going to skyrocket because their health system is completely overloaded and they can't treat the sick that are coming in.

The Italians were very resistant to closing down events and practicing social distancing and now it has blown up in their faces. That's why everyone has started to freak out in the last few days.

Yeah, but other than that.

Yeah but there's like some other thing that people die from that's worse than 1/15 so let's compare CV to that and assume everything's fine.

Well, to be fair that is 15,000 tested cases. In reality there are probably 10 times that at least.

Edit:But I get your point. It seems the latest is everyone wants to say how much worse H1N1 was to show how we are all over reacting.

Ames Schools just sent emails essentially saying, "We know DM are taking two extra days off of school. The Dept of Public Health hasn't recommended doing that yet, but there is an announcement expected tomorrow. We'll know more about school then."

Dallas Center Grimes schools sent a similar email:

We are aware that Des Moines Public Schools has decided to extend their Spring Break to March 30th. We will make a decision by the end of the day tomorrow and will communicate that to you knowing a lot of families will return from spring break next week.

Please know we are working through a number of scenarios and will keep you updated as this is a very fluid situation.

My wife said when she picked up our kid from the before & after program at the elementary school the hallway where they hang their hats and coats they had removed all the hooks from the wall so it would appear they are prepping for a deep clean of the school since they are off tomorrow. I have a bad feeling schools across the state will be announcing similar plans tomorrow which likely means our daycare center for our almost 3 year old will be the next to close too. When I picked up tonight no one was at the front desk and the owner's office door was closed with window shade down so I suspected the top staff members there were likely in a meeting because it was the same when I walked out and the front desk phone was ringing and there is always someone at that desk at all times.

Have a feeling a lot of employers will be having to deal with staffing the rest of this month because if daycare centers close down too we really have no option but to stay home with the kids. My employer announced some changes to paid leave for this pandemic so have a feeling the office is going to be pretty quiet starting next week. My wife can work from home so our kindergartner is able to keep herself occupied on her own but our youngest not quite so we both probably will have to arrange some kind of paid leave if our daycare center closes down for any amount of time.

Seemed like a big crowd at C.Y. Stephens tonight. Looked it up. "Waitress," one of the biggest shows of the year. Typically lots of frail 60+ year olds at these big Stephens shows. Wonder how they made the decision to go on with the show.

How many people were on the same cruise? 15 of the 16 Iowa cases are from the same cruise!

Don't hold me to this but I have heard a rumor that those people in Johnson county aren't even residents there but were re-located for treatment after they were off-boarded from that cruise. Either way so far Iowa has avoided community spread of the virus and it's all been tied to the same trip. If a case in the DM Metro area pops up that is not tied to international travel that will surely change things drastically around here.

Just saw that Norwalk is not canceling classes after spring break quite yet so that gives me hope that not everyone will over-react but it's obviously a very fluid situation right now

Dennis Dodd now sharing that cancelling college football season this fall is a possibility. At what point are we allowed to describe the response to these events as an overreaction?

So you think we should be playing all of the conference tournaments with fans in the stands? Is that an overreaction in your opinion?

Agree, not sure what the holdup is for testing. I do know there are a lot of hypochondriacs (spl?) that want tested and don't need it - akin to those hoarding TP out of panic when diarrhea isn't even a symptom.

I got toilet paper today because we are pretty low on it. Figured I better get some since I was in town. Like I usually do. o_O
Ohio has enacted a mandatory 3 week spring break at arting tomorrow for k-12. State wide. Anything like this in IA?

Not statewide yet, but it's coming.. Des Moines actually did it today.
