It's not all about on the court per the definition of The Big 10 Sportsmanship Award:

"The Big Ten Sportsmanship Awards. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting."

We're talking about basketball and Jamie got kicked out of a basketball game. How often do fans get asked to leave a gym by the officials? Far less often than coaches get technicals.

He is on the Dean's list so the academic standing part is covered. He's never been in trouble outside of the sports-competition setting so I think that is covered as well. Maybe he has the best grades on the team so they gave him the award.
