Right I was more talking about recent teams, or I would've even thrown Jake Sullivan in there.
Nixon i don't know what to do with. Matt Thomas wasn't great his freshman year, so hoping Jackson and grill can get it figured out similarly. Jacobsen is what he is from three, 30% I guess.
I just wanted a trip down memory lane on teams not guarding Holloway at all lol.
That first part just isn't really true. They aren't good offensively but they're a top 40 offense without being able to shoot the 3 at all and they're getting really good looks at them (which is by design of the defense for sure). If they are even just a decent shooting team (35%ish), this is a whole different story as it not only give the obvious points there but it opens things up for TH and is makes Bolton more effective and you get the post players some easy looks.
Freshman year Matt Thomas would still have the 3rd best 3pt % on this year's team. Lol
What about Grill? He seems to be someone who may be real good with better timing.

Yup. Today's game is a lot about spacing and if you can't shoot it, the defense does not have to be as spread out, nor do they have to fly around to contest shots.
We've gotten to the point where teams don't even have to work that hard because they don't have to account for more than 1 shooter on the floor. We have two guys that average a 35% or better 3pt percentage and one of them gets significant minutes. Not only that, but the second worst 3pt shooter on our team (Nixon), averages the second most attempts on the team! How in the hell does that happen? How do you allow that to happen as a coach?
Are you kidding? I've never seen him shoot the ball the same way twice. His form is wildly inconsistent. I notice this as a rank amateur. And his shot selection is also terrible, both timing in the shot clock and his shooting rythym. Both those things are coachable, and in his second year with ISU they are both bad. I don't think I can fault the kid, really, and least not just him.
He was brought here to bring defensive prowess to a team that desperately needed it, and simultaneously develop his shot and offensive game. Made sense. Unfortunately, I think his defense regressed and the offense just hasn't improved.

Completely inexplicable, and that's on CSP as of about 3 weeks ago. Giving him a shot to get his game legs or shoot out of it was fine. But at this point, the dream is over.
I wish the kid well, and I think he can contribute to this team with defense, ballhandling, rebounding even. But he can't be allowed to continue with status quo. He can't feel good about how it's going. Use him properly and help him succeed.
I think at this point you have to start someone who's going to give you a shot to succeed offensively and let the defense play out as it may. Lewis or Jackson have a far greater ceiling on offense. Lewis technically has the second best 3pt percentage on the team and although Tre's is not great, he's a freshman who could definitely use the minutes. His defense has also been pretty good too except for two absolutely terrible fouls at the end of the 1st half two games in a row.
through 5 b12 games, we're giving up 43% from 3. Next worse team (TCU) is at 36%.

ehh not really. longer 3 pt line and tougher competition. and he hasn't been to the line much at all.
As a team, we're one of the worst in the nation at getting to the FT line.
What does it look like from a non-basketball standpoint?
It's difficult to be good at a sport when you aren't good at the main objective of putting a ball through a hoop.
I was just about to put this in here.
My comments:
1. You couldn't pay me to rewatch that game against TTU or even Baylor, I'd probably go crazy.
2. There might be little bit of a reason why we were given 15 wide open 3's. However if you're at this level, you have to shoot that shot.
3. There isn't one guy on the roster besides Tyrese Halliburton that can consistently knock down a 3. The other guy's shots haven't been even close.. I mean for God sakes, Lewis comes into the game, his first shot is a 3 and misses the entire hoop by about 3 feet. Most of the 3 point shots we're taking are so bad, we don't even have a chance at an offensive rebound!
4. You can point to bad shooters as one of the reasons why we're struggling terribly, however, who was the one who recruited these guys? As a junior and a sophomore, Zion Griffin and Terrence Lewis really struggle against high level competition. But, they have to be played because we literally have no one else to throw in there.
5. Prentiss Nixon should have a limit on 3 point attempts. It's bad and I mean it's really really bad. He averages the 2nd most attempts behind Halliburton, yet is the worst 3 point shooter on the team. How is that allowed? How as a head coach do you allow something like that to happen? Is it because there are no other options? I would honestly like that question to be asked and see what answer he would give. And I understand if you're going to play him he has to take a couple to keep the defense honest, but averaging the second most 3's on a team is not keeping the defense honest, it's actively hunting your shot. Lol
