Ankeny just announced a two-hour early dismissal for the day. Which seems a little weak to me as it looks like we're at least a couple hours away from actual snow falling.

That's just it, if the heavy snow is pushing into Des Moines by 4 pm, get the buses off the road before that gridlock.

Yeah, you can get burned, but it's always made more sense than sending the kids to school, having everything go to crap and release early in the middle of it.

On average its 6 degrees warmer in winter and you get 20" instead of 30" avg snowfall. If you want to call that a lot different ok, but it's not like were talking different wardrobes here.

No wind either. Do you think there’s a noticeable difference between the harshness of winters between DSM and KC?

I'm usually on the "pansies easily could have had school today easily" bandwagon but never have a problem with an early dismissal.

This, and I'm usually the "those pansies cancelled school for a 2" snowfall" guy. But yeah, you get in a partial day, counts as a full day with no make up in June and with this kind of timing it's perfect, just get the kids home and error on the side of caution.

Also, even though school got out early and they cancelled the HS bball game coach is making the team practice tonight.

So one of those "not mandatory because it can't be....but I'll make sure to notice who isn't here" practices? Sounds like a coach that is looking to get the school and themselves wrapped up in a lawsuit if a kid crashes tonight.

Exactly...but maybe someone wiser than him just got in his ear, just got another update that there is no practice tonight.

This I will defend. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think dismissals for heat happen much less frequently now that more buildings have AC. But having grown up in schools without it (and I'm not even that old) it was miserable and it reeked. You aren't going to learn anything in that environment.

As for cold, last winter it got so cold a couple days that buses wouldn't start. That alone pretty much seals the deal.

By the 10 pm last night I had settled on 4 to 7 in Des Moines. Still looks pretty good. Heaviest band just a bit SE of DSM. Maybe settling in near 6.
