What would be an average cost to have an attorney put together a basic will? I’m not getting younger or thinner and this is past due.

$300-500 sounds about right and you can definitely find attorneys now that just charge a set fee for that type of work.
Thats right about what I paid and worth it. I'd looked at some resources my work provides to set up, but too many nuances I wanted to discuss (power of attorney, child custody, etc) that I freaked myself out thinking if I did a plug and play type will, I'd do it wrong.

My mom had her's changed twice (some significant changes) a month or two before her passing this year. They drove 20 miles each way to her 3 times to get it done. Bill was 400 some.

If it's not too complicated, you can do one on LegalZoom for like $50 or $100.

Did my first one with LegalZoom, then went to an attorney a few years later. We had a good laugh when he saw some of the "options" I picked with LegalZoom, as I wasn't really aware what some of the legal ramifications were with how I set it up. Think I paid about $800 for two living wills and two POA's, but was worth the cost when I was educated on the legalese of Wills, etc...

Might want to consider a trust depending on size of estate. If an estate has to be opened to probate it will cost the estate money and you can avoid that with a trust.

Edit: I don't know anything about law, I'd better sit this one out...

Did one about 5 years ago and I'd have to go back and find what we paid but wasnt more than a couple hundred bucks I think. Friend of mine I grew up with is partner in a law firm in Adel and it was really quick and easy to do. Did most of the work over email then came into the office to review and make and changes before finalizing it.

A simple last will and testament that sets up a trust for your kids shouldn't take much for billed hours as they have a basic will template they can fill in and customize with any specific wording you need. Probably one of the more easy things to do if you have the right law office.

$350 for us about 5 yrs ago.

We’ll probably find out how much an update costs here shortly.

I love saving money on DIY websites, but to me, saving a couple hundred dollars isn’t worth it on this. I want to know everything is rock solid if my kids get left without my wife and me.
