one of the things i really liked about hayden fry was his descriptions, his fryisms if you will. for example, describing his fullback running like a rolling ball of butcher knives.

i just heard the first one from chizik last night. he was asked in the halftime interview how his first five weeks have been and he described it like drinking water from a firehose. time to keep track of these!

I agree that it would be cool to keep track of Chizik-isms, but this one is not his. The firehose thing has been around forever.

Hayden Fry was a jerk. His condescending attitude towards ISU and patronizing remarks about our players after he ran the score up on us was unbelieveable.

As long as the man doesn't scratch were it itches or says "Baby Bull"

Or have the players doing the Hokey Pokey...

After all, "the sun doesn't shine on the same dog's butt two days in a row." (NO idea what that was supposed to mean but Hayden Cry said it.)

I once sat behind (kitty-corner from) Hayden Fry on a flight from St. Louis to Cedar Rapids. At the time I was dressed in an Iowa State tshirt and hat. Hayden, upon noticing me, turned and asked me if I was a student at Iowa State. Because I was about to be a senior in high school at the time, I replied, "No, but I plan to be in a year." He replied with something to the effect of, "Well, good luck. It's a very good school," with absolutely no arrogance or condescension in his voice. Form your own opinion, but I respected him for it.

I was also amused by Chiziks description of his first 5 weeks on the job as "like trying to drink water out of a firehose", what a visual. The little I have heard Chizik speak, he seems clear, articulate, informative. I wasn't looking for a splash of humor but a few one liners can go along way toward shaping his personality.

This time around I don't care if he is Butch Cassidy or the Sundance Kid, I just want to see more wins than losses at the end of his tenure.

word on the street is the new coaches are having a drill instructor type presence, and the players are doing more running and conditioning now then ever before...direct quote "i think my shoulders are gonna fall off" all the running bear crawls crab walks etc.

I thought it was funny at halftime of the mens bb game against Drake, they had introduced Gene to the crowd. This being just a few days after his press conference. He talked about now having to buy a fog/smoke machine for his son so his son can run through the fog out of their garage.

not to draw another comparison, but that was one of the first things fry did too, he was a former marine. i remember when iowa barely lost to nebraska, think it was his first year, and everybody was having a love fest and fry went ballistic with the press, saying losing was losing, he changed attitudes and perceptions of team, fans and press. i see similarities.

as far as fry being a jerk, i met him a couple times as a kid and he has a real sense of humor, and was very nice to me. he treated me like i was a friend of the family. i was impressed with him in every way. if you look at the legacy he has left behind with coaches in college football, he is one of the great great coaches all time in my book.

True that it's not his, so probably not a Chizik-ism technically. However, it does give one a sense of Chizik lingo. It's a known phrase but still gives insight to his vocabulary. I vote YES to the spirit of the post.

The year was 1998.My senior year of high school our football coach took the captains down to a hawk football practice. He introduced everyone else and then introduced me to Hayden Fry as the only Cyclone fan in NE Iowa.
Hayden smiled and said "My daughter goes there, its not a bad school. Kids gotta go somewhere to learn how to drive a tractor." I'm regretting not calling him up 2 weeks later when we whooped their *** in IC.

but he still had that god-awful cookie duster, and for that alone he is considered a douchebag in my book.

Until Chizik starts running up the score on Iowa by throwing bombs in the fourth quarter when you're already up by 45, I will never use his name in the same sentence at Fry.
For all of those "he said nice things to me" entries above, actions speak louder than words. Especially 'Ole Raisin Face's.

Lesser known sayings that would be cool:

Busier than a 3-legged cat tryin to bury a turd on a frozen pond

Stiffer than a wedding wienie

Running like a striped assed ape
