UPDATED: How should ISU honor Jack Trice more?

We haven't had a good football movie in a while. The Blind Side has to be the last one and it's been what? 10 years?

If I won a major major lottery, I'd try to throw some dollars to get one started with major actors etc. Blindside was made with $30million 10 years ago, it isn't crazy to think it could be done for similar/slightly more. First showing could be at Jack Trice or Hilton open to the public/season ticket holders.

Who would play Jack though? Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) comes to mind.

Hardest part besides money would probably be getting Minnesota on board.

"When," not "if" you win the lottery!

I am thinking that we could incorporate Jack's letter prior to every football game by using the video board. Perhaps do a video montage of historical pictures, the statue, and Jack Trice Stadium showing while reading Jack's letter aloud over the audio system.

I would suggest that the audio/montage could be played just prior to sounding the sirens as a way to start hyping the crowd in the stadium. Also, it would be another signal to the folks still in the lots to shut the tailgate down and get into the stadium.

...and create a video that shows Trice running down the field in his uniform which then morph's into all the various uniforms up to the present.

Always thought that one September Prime Video would produce the movie, ala Jackie Robinson.

There are a number of excellent ideas in this thread, but is it possible that any more honors could seem extreme and maybe patronizing? Still, the memory, the man, and what he stood for as a human is ultimately most important.

As seen today, the Smithsonian is going to install replicas of Neil Armstrong's spacesuit at 15 baseball stadiums across the country this summer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing.

It doesn't take much squinting to see how ISU could be inspired by something like this. Why not create replicas of Jack's gold jersey and install them in libraries and other civic spaces across Iowa and nationally?

... is it possible that any more honors could seem extreme and maybe patronizing? ...

I actually urge ISU to consider how they can spread his story state-wide and nationally, rather than being content with lightly sharing his story to a captive audience of people who are already physically at Jack Trice Stadium.

Ultimately, I think an annual "Jack Trice Week" is the best way to go about it and within the week of activities, there can be many different avenues to highlight the fight against inequality. Perhaps the proposed 6k race (3.7 miles) raises money for a different charity every year. There can be custom merchandise that directs revenues to minority scholarships. A different national museum should have a Jack Trice jersey replica on display every fall.

Other ISU people can be honored within the context of this week. How about John Crawford, the first black basketball player? Why not have an annual big-time speaker during this week? (Last year during October, ISU had a Norman Borlaug Lecture and Poster Competition.)

A simple look around our current world reveals that inequality is alive and well. THAT, my friends, is why Jack Trice lives on.

Forgive me if someone has already suggested this, but it seems to me that there’s a pretty obvious answer to this question.

Play Minnesota on the anniversary of Jack’s death.

Every 6-12 months, I send a follow-up email to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis about having a Jack Trice permanent exhibit. They put up a temporary one when we were there for the Liberty Bowl.

One of the best books on the history of the integration of college football has Jack Trice on the cover. This deserves more home-grown coverage.

Place a statue of Mid/American Energy somewhere outside the stadium, And place Jack Trice Field as the marquee banner.

This morning Alex Halsted tweeted a link to an updated video of the new NEZ complex going in. I noticed some Jack Trice homages and tweeted a small thread of six tweets (with pictures!) about them here:

Historically speaking, I wonder if the five stripe pattern is the right design to push Jack Trice's story, given it was a popular generic design used by the MAJORITY of college teams during the 1920s.

Even the Iowa Hawkeyes wore the exact same jersey design in their game against Minnesota in 1923 on the same field that Jack Trice suffered his fatal injuries the previous month.

As a subtle design motif hidden here and there, sure, why not. But as the giant centerpiece leading into the stadium ... I'm not so sure.

I think a nod to his famous words (I WILL, etc.), his jersey number that isn't currently recognized by ISU (37), or even his name (JACK TRICE) might work better.

Either way, exciting to see any nods about Jack being incorporated!

Thoughts?

I saw they're are getting the statue of Trice placed back on central campus today and will be having a short program tomorrow at 1:30.

I was unaware about the stripes design being so common at the time. Probably good suggestion not to maximize it for this context.

I like the idea of 37 being incorporate in some fashion.

As for the OP why not a Jack Trice Award given nationally to a NCAA player who displays honor, scholastic commitment, sportsmanship and football achievement?
