At the End of the Day...Kansas

More of a metaphor.

Will McDonald has caused me to have flashbacks to Jason Berryman. I don't think I've seen an ISU DE (or many others) with the quickness and speed that, when ramped up to his best, is seemingly impossible for OTs to stop. I can't wait to see him mature into a much larger version of a grounded, solid Jason Berryman.
I would have said somewhere ranging between Berryman and Reggie Hayward—who really didn’t come into his own until putting on muscle in the NFL.

Thanksgiving reading material. Will waist at least 10 minutes.

Thanks, Jay!

One of the fascinating things to me next season is going to be seeing how this staff handles having so much talent on the DL.

As interesting as seeing how they piece together an OL.

And if all the defensive backs put it all together the way that it looks like Anthony Johnson will.

Did I mention the wide receivers?

Fun, fun, fun!

color me very concerned about this position next year. one lone senior (sean foster) and not much proven experience coming back. cant believe the staff didn't go hard after a juco or 2 the past 2 seasons with such a shortage of OL in the senior class next season. or a grad transfer.

That’s actually pretty easy to believe. If this staff thinks they have a pat hand.

For the record, the staff did offer a handful of JC offensive tackles early on. Now it appears that they aren’t hitting that position as hard as the did DT with Bankston. That’s easily interpretable as Campbell discovering as the season progressed that he’s quite content with the young guys already on campus.

And of course, “grad transfer season” is yet to come.

It will be a very interesting off season. The defensive line will be different with a different set of skills and don’t forget that Jaquan Bailey will be in the mix.

Receiver is interesting because they really had a nice blend of skills this year. If all the tight ends come back, that helps the offensive line. In fact, I think that is why the line has made some strides on the edge this year.

you will have Ramos, Downing, Newell, and Hudson. The right tackle will be up for grabs with Foster getting first shot, but someone will have to step up there. Meeker settles down for a solid season, but his production is not overly difficult to replace.

you will have hall, Brock, and Lang in the backfield. Shaw will likely take Pettway spot and you should see Leonard Glass be a factor to replace Jones.

i worry a little about replacing White and Lewis in the secondary. DJ Miller I am fine with. Two others will need to step up.

bottom line is that there is a lot of cans on the shelf. The redshirt class is very talented. Joe Scates should take another step forward. Aric Horne and Coal Flansburg are good players. And will McDonald should settle in as a rotation player.

excited to write about the possibilities.

I like the engine metaphor. I think you could also make that case for last season as well. How is the engine going to get fixed this off season?
Sounds like an article theme or great thread.

I trust this staff. If they’re not going hard after a juco or grad transfer, I trust that means they think they’re ok there or the talent we currently have is better than anything out there on the market.

I bet we are in the market for a grad transfer Tackle this off season. Finding one that fits the culture will be the difficult part.

McDonald really needs to work on some DL moves. He is really fast, and athletic but I see him trying to rush off the end and getting tied up (held) trying to just run past his guy. He needs some kid of swim move to the inside to counter what OL are doing to push him further to the outside. Guy could be a monster with a little more weight and some development.

He spent all of his development time last offseason learning to play linebacker from scratch. I’m reasonably confident that won’t be the case this offseason.
