The real difference is the top half of the B1G is really good. The Big 12 top half, not so much.

Other than Kansas, every team in the Big 12 is a bowl team in the B1G. There's a reason almost every computer ranking has the Big 12 as the top conference; it's depth.
Iowa State knows it's IMPOSSIBLE to win with a 3rd string QB.

Texas can’t seem to beat Maryland and ISU has lost their last 5 games to a terrible BIG West team.
As for the Wildcats, they’re like Iowa/ISU. Not a ton of margin for injuries or attrition. Their QB from last year is in the NFL and we all know how important that position is.
