Deadspin in a tailspin

Gizmodo now I guess? Kotaku, I09, and all their other blogs are still under the same media group aren't they? I read all those pretty regularly so I wonder what the impact amongst all those is going to be.
All of the Gawker sites were bought by Univision a few years ago. They were in turn sold to another group. Different management for the different sites though

I think the parent company is called g/o media. It runs - among others - Gizmodo, Kotaku, Jezebel, and The Onion. No word yet on what'll happen to those sites.

I used to be an avid Deadspin reader, and I liked it because it had interesting stories about sports that typically wasn't a box score or game result. I don't care for the political stuff at all - there was a number of stories I just wouldn't click because I didn't care.

Their content has been less and less appealing to me over time, and I while I still glanced at the headlines, I didn't find myself reading very often recently. Guess I'll remove the bookmark permanently.

A tangential thought to the Deadspin story...

I sympathize with people who want a break from what seems like a constant deluge of bad news, BUT politics and sports have been inextricably linked forever. It's not a new condition and anyone who thinks otherwise is simply unaware of history.

To use an ISU example from almost 100 years ago.

As Jack Trice laid dying in the Iowa State hospital, the Mizzou AD was writing a letter barring him from playing in the Missouri game the following weekend, due to political conditions on the Mizzou campus--such as the Negro Question.

For many of the schools in the Big 12 (née MVC), Jack's presence on the field was inherently political, for at that very same moment politicians in Congress and elsewhere were battling about whether black people ought to be given the same rights as white people.

So, here was ISU thumbing their nose at many other schools and the overriding sentiment of the day by saying, yes, we have a black man on the field with our other white players. No competent reporter could have ignored the political aspects of Jack's letter when he talked of lifting up his entire race on the field.

It's always been there and it's up to people if they want to see it or not.

As a Barstool follower, the Barstool/Deadspin writers feud is comedy.

The Barstool people are human trash. Dealt with them professionally too, and they are even bigger piles of trash then their public persona, which is saying something.

If you think Deadspin was ever just about sports you missed the point of it. I bet Magary ends up at the Ringer or the Athletic. As long as I get my "Haters guide to William Sonoma catalog" and "Why your team sucks" I will be ok.

Hard to fathom Magary at The Ringer. He trashes Bill Simmons pretty regularly. He seems to do enough work away from Deadspin that he'll be fine, one way or another.

Good point. With his health scare, maybe he will just write books and count his money.

Get woke, go broke. Seems to be happening to a lot of media sites these days.

ESPN started injecting politics into sports, and then made a course correction. Deadspin did the same, but those in charge of creating content seem to be unable or unwilling to pull back.

I, like most males in their key demographics, watch or read about sports because I want to know about sports. I go there to avoid politics/social commentary or have it drastically muted.

That is the point of sports. To distract people and let you escape from everyday problems in life. It might help if the politics they interject are not so decisive and a little more balanced. That just seems impossible in today's world. But politics are impossible to ignore altogether as we are seeing with the whole NCAA and skirting employment rules.

I don't agree with it but completely understand.

There's a lot of - I'll put this gently - uninformed speculation in this take but let's at least deal with the facts. They said just a day or two ago that their non-sports content - including its political commentary - often draws the most traffic. "Sticking to sports" is almost certainly to the site's detriment.

If you're a Deadspin reader and feel like it only just recently made some pivot to including political commentary...then I'd question your reading comprehension. This is who they always were.

Which is all fine, but I also the writers who left acting like they are some kind of martyrs to be comical. The owners wanted to go in a certain direction, and advised their employees of such. If you don't want to go that direction, then find somewhere else to write. Pretty simple. I just don't get acting like you've been persecuted or something. This is how the business world works.

I mean, that's literally what they did so I'm not clear on your complaint here. Yes, it's management's prerogative to do what it likes with the site. But it's also clear that they're lying about their reasons for making changes, and that their reasons aren't based on any kind of business interest at all.

For people who follow and care about journalism, they're taking an important stand because what's happened there has happened or will happen to many other outlets. And it isn't as if good journalism jobs are just out there for the taking.

I understand that's what they are doing, but I get the sense they want applauded or treated as martyrs or something. It all just seemed very self-important to me. If you want to start your own website focused on politics and sports, drum up the funding, take on the financial risk, and go for it.

All that matters is that Drew continues the Funbag, Jamboroo, and WYTS. The talent of the rest of the Deadspin staff has tailed off considerably over the years.
