Haliburton #12 on ESPN+ Top 25

Why? He was really good last year and even better last summer.
I know but top 12 is some high praise. He was super efficient on a good scoring team and now he will be asked to shoulder a much bigger load without as much offensive firepower around him. Not saying he can't do it or won't have an amazing year but top 12 is just some high expectations.

  • Honors: 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup All-Tournament Team.
  • Member of the 2019 USA Basketball U19 National Team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 7-0 record at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship in Heraklion, Greece. Played and started in all seven games, averaged a team-high 24.7 minutes, 7.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, a team-best 6.9 assists and 2.3 steals a game. Shot a team-best 68.8 percent from the field and a team-best 55.5 percent (10-18) from 3-point.
  • Recorded 21 points and 8 assists versus Lithuania, 10 points and 7 assists in win over Russia and 8 points and 8 assists versus New Zealand.
  • Played and started in the USA's two exhibition games, averaged 21.5 minutes, 3.0 points. 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists a game. Shot 42.9 percent from the field.
  • Named to the 2019 USA Men's U19 World Cup Team on June 20.

7.9 points / 24.7 minutes = 0.3198 points per minute

Scale that up to 35 minutes = 11.2 points per game

Still going to need a lot from Bolton and the big men like that, but that ain't bad. That is scaling up his usage levels while maintaining the same insane efficiency as before.

I totally agree that he is going to be very good. Top 12 is just really high praise that is all I am saying. I don't remember seeing Niang even getting that type of praise.

Yep...went through a little bit of a lull and maybe was reserved about stepping out as a true freshman but there were a couple of moments in the B12 tourney where he just looked like 'F it, I'm gonna do what I do' and it paid off.

That is fair enough.

The above is implying...

-- He is at least first-team all-Big 12 (and he was voted the same in the preseason) and competes for CPOTY, losing out to somebody like Doke or Clark.
-- Might still sneak in as a third-team All-American.
-- We probably win a lot of games in the meantime.

These things would meet or surpass the best years of Royce, Kane, Ejim, Niang, and Morris.

It is hard to be bad/not make the NCAA tournament when you have a guard that good.

I agree that is a high percentile for the possible outcomes for Tyrese. But with all the doom and gloom around here the past few days, I want to be optimistic about now.

:)

Sweet. Can I ramp up all of the other stats as well?
How about Steals and Assists?
Steals: 2.3 --> 3.3
Assists: 6.9 --> 9.8
What about rebounds?
Reb: 2.4 --> 3.4
How about FG% and 3%?
FG%: 68.8 --> 97.5
3%: 55.5 --> 78.6

We are never losing again.

State of the program I suppose. National perception of Iowa State Basketball is very favorable after the last 8 years. 4 Conference Tourney Titles "talk" and 2 sweet 16s is solid for most programs.

Also, TH is a great player. Really helped that he played at a high level this summer with the U19 Team USA. He's a stud, at a good program. Thus, the high ranking/honors.

:)

I was listening to the CBS eye on college podcast and Matt Norelander made a case to Gary Parrish that Tyrese deserved 3rd team AA inclusion in the CBS preseason player predictions.

Haliburton doesn't flash like most that make the lists but his overall game and second level metrics have the attention of the national media and the NBA scouts.

Yep.

Boomer fan guy from rural Iowa posting on CF sees, “TH unorthodox 3 point shot”

NBA Scouts sees: “43 % from 3”

League drafts on potential. See him as Lonzo Ball with range. Maybe a bit of a streak but he checks all the PG boxes plus he's 6'5".

I'm cautiously optimistic (less optimistic than ESPN) because efficiency doesn't always scale nicely with usage. Haliburton was the 3rd most efficient offensive player last year at an ORtg of 136.8, but only at at 10.1% usage. I think he needs to up his usage up to around 20% or more to be the leader that we expect him to be. I took at look at the last two years of ORtg and Usage data to try to find a couple high efficiency/low usage to high usage examples, but didn't find many (though I stopped about 25 players in sorting from highest ORtg). Probably the closest example I found was Skyler Flatten at SDSU, who had an ORtg of 127.0 at 13.7% usage in 2017-18 and went to 118.5 ORtg 20.0% usage in 2018-19, which is almost equivalent (just speaking in terms of ORtg and Usage) to Michael Jacobsen last year. I think Haliburton will be above 118 ORtg this year, but I'm thinking more around 120-122 ORtg, which is still pretty darn good but I'm not sure it's 12th best player in the country good.
