Prohm Press Conference Notes

From what I saw from MJ last year is we were asking way too much of him. The first 5 minutes of the game, he was fantastic. I think he got winded pretty quickly in a game. Being able to spell him might make him a lot more efficient.
Boy, I dunno, I really like his game. He's a pretty smart player and one that isn't mind blowing at one skill but just overall damn good. He reminds me of a Kyle Wiltjer-light type of guy. Notice I said light.

Where did I say that he wasn't good? I think he is a great player who we asked to do too much last year, who might be more efficient with fresh legs.

Never indicated that you said he wasn't good. Calm down. I personally don't think we asked too much of him, he is probably surprising us with how good he is compared to his Nebraska stats.

Jacobson deserves playing time, but we are much better off if Solo, Conditt, and or Zion do well enough to demand starter minutes. MJ is great against the bad to mediocre teams but struggles against top competition.
And Zion, Conditt, or Young don’t struggle against top competition?

Jacobson is the best all-around forward we have. Of course, it would be great if the others have improved to his level and they can complement each other. But if they can improve, so can Jacobson, so your post is rather odd.

I'm not sure where the comments about MJ being bad against good competition comes in other than the Ohio State game. He was really good in KC against pretty good competition. Played really well against good competition in Hawaii. He was probably our most consistent guy throughout the season other than maybe Shayok.

That is kind of the line where a defense respects you from outside period --

No matter the position. If you are under that, they let you shoot it.

It makes sense, too. Something like 1.0 or 1.1 points per possession is pretty typical.

3 * 35% = 1.05 ppp

If below 35%, an offense is probably hurting its efficiency by taking those shots.

If above, then you are likely helping it. Defenses react accordingly.

Slow down numbers guy. You omitted 2nd chance points. If you can rebound a third of those misses and make half your put backs they're at 1.48333 this would also cover making a third of your second chance threes. I'll let someone else calculate third and forth chance probabilities.

Wait, but you are not counting third or fourth chance points, which our opponents seem to get quite often. Has to be 1.5 or more.

So who’s the top reserve guard? Jackson? Grill?

Tre Jackson.

I have a feeling Grill is going to be a 9th/10th man type guy in year 1. He'll see some decent minutes in the 5 non-con games against lower tier opponents, maybe even sporadically at other times early on, but I doubt he is in the regular rotation when conference play starts.

The one reason I said maybe Grillis Prohm mentioned him when asked who can shoot the ball for this team and then I think it was Robinson who said they kid is always studying film and trying to get better.

Haven't seen that quote but good to hear! Seems like a great kid and looking forward to the potential he can unlock focusing on basketball full time.

I could see the frontcourt minutes being split something like...

Jacobson: 25 mins
Solomon: 22 mins
Zion: 18 mins
Conditt: 15 mins

I think that is pretty accurate for the first half of the year.

Prohm's comments talking about Zion and George are telling to me. He is setting his expectation that if reached will earn them minutes during the conference season. Prohm likes to play fast and small which having Zion playing PF would fit ideally. Conditt is also the type of rim running rebound/blocking center in the McKay Lard mold that fits his preferred style.

Jacobson and Young are solid B12 level starters, but don't have the stretch or speed to play Prohm's preferred system. Not to say you can't win with MJ and SY playing the post but it will be a slower more low scoring defensive style.
If Conditt and Zion prove ready to take over the post positions in the noncon I think Prohm will transition to playing his preferred faster style giving them a majority of minutes to end the year.

Prohm’s preferred style, or yours?

Look at his ISU and Murray teams tempo ratings. Prohm’s preferred style changes to his roster, and this year it’ll be largely based on the strengths of MJ and Young. His teams aren’t slow, but they’re not so fast that those two will lose minutes based on fit issues.

Prohm plays players who can defend and he can trust..

unless Conditt and ZG make gigantic strides I just don’t see them getting more minutes than SY and MJ..

MJ avg 11 pts and 6reb shooting 34% from 3....playing as a 5 when he’s more suited to a PF 4 spot..

I think that Prohm will split things equally between the 4 bigs and who plays more and end game will be who is having better game imo..

we haven’t had 4 bigs who are all big 12 level kids in a while.. Ezcited to hear that Zion has really taken huge step.. this team needed that.

This is going to be a fascinating season.

Put me in the camp of cautiously optimistic. Gun to my head we're a bubble team and we'll take it down to the wire this year in terms of a tourney bid.

Can Prohm put the right pieces together and get the roles/chemistry to fit?

Can we be a tougher, more defensive oriented team?

Can TH continue to elevate his game to another level?

Can we survive a really tough non-conf schedule?

Can Grill/Jackson/Griffin be a major contributor?
