Pettway compared to Martin

Who are "they?" I didn't hear many Hok fans getting all that excited about Martin. Mostly I heard suspicion about what Harbaugh said, as if he was trying somehow to muck up the transfer.

If you read any hok message boards you'd know.

I think what Pettway has been able to do in short time with a stable of capable receivers says a lot about his ability too. Already had established players in D Jones, Milton, and Kolar then add in the other guys like Shaw Jr, Chase Allen, Akers, and even Scates and Soehner who all get some snaps and get some targets too and it's pretty impressive the kind of impact he's had.

Speaking of that group I really like what we have seen from Sean Shaw Jr. in a limited role. He's a big receiver at 6-6 212 and maybe will grow into that Hakeem Butler type of receiver some day where Brock can just air out a jump ball and have him go up and beat the DB for it. Wouldn't mind seeing him in on a few more plays. Purdy has a lot of diverse options in the passing game this year even without Butler and Montgomery as his safety nets.

We’ve got a lot of very good WR here, so it’s not surprising Martin doesn’t compare favorably.

I, for one, am shocked, SHOCKED, that Jim Harbaugh, of all people, would over-hype and over-value the talent of a player he recruited.

Also, outside of linemen and linebackers, Ferentz has never been particularly good at utilizing the talent of his players, especially the skill positions on offense.
Kirk has used running backs to max efficiency in the past.

I think Smith-Marsette and Brandon Smith are both good receivers and would play on a lot of Power 5 teams. People tend to forget that Kirk rarely utilizes first year players very often.

Living in CR I laugh at how Iowa fans put so much credibility on Harbaugh's claim that Oliver Martin was their best receiver. IMO, he covered all the bases on that one.

If Martin succeeds at Iowa,: he can say " I told you he was good"
If Martin doesn't succeed at Iowa, He can say " They took our best receiver and ruined him."
If Michigan's WR room flounders he can say, "We lost our best receiver."

Brilliant statement on his end.

When did he say he was their best receiver? The odds he said that with Collins, Black and Peoples-Jones on the roster is pretty small. I think he said he was their starting slot, which doesn't really exist there.

That was pretty line driven though outside of Shonn Greene and Wadley was pretty gifted. I’m sure I’m missing a couple studs but even Fred Russell’s success was mostly driven by an elite O-line.

I could have been an all conference back with some of those lines. They converted a ******* fullback into an all conference type back at one point.

Can't remember exactly but I believe it was sometime during spring camp.
Harbaugh never said he was the best receiver, he said something about it being interesting Oliver Martin was transferring because he was looking to start this year. Now this was in the spring and there was a lot more evaluation to be done after getting the entire team together for the summer. So to firmly state Oliver Martin was going to be a starter for them this year would be a stretch, especially because he rarely sees the field for the Hawks right now.
