ISU press conference about band situation

I was in HS marching band, and one thing we're taught is to not let anyone "break rank", no matter what, we were supposed to make people/crowds go around the band. I'm assuming the Iowa band operates under a similar mindset, which just makes the fact they were intentionally sent that way, to a massive crowd of people, even worse.

I would be FUMING if I'm the turf management guys. They ignored security measures all to troll a crowd of cyclone fans by playing their fight song, and in the process completely trample the field after a rain soaked day. My god this is insanity.

To be fair, our students used the field as a slip and slide so they really don't have a leg to stand on...

I hate Iowa, but I hope you're joking, those are probably normal motions they do when the fight song is played. You really think all the sousaphones were making a synchronized attempt at hitting our fans?

Here is an example of the Iowa marching band playing their fight song in a crowded area. Check out the sousaphones not swinging.

Whether the motions are normal or not, they clearly have the ability to play the fight song without them.

The video inside the stadium shows them going OUT OF THEIR WAY to go out the west entrance where they knew fans were trying to exit.

That video is the kicker to me. The game is over. You have no reason to be playing anymore. There is no need to walk out playing music or in formation. This was clearly thought out before hand and done purposefully to **** off Iowa State fans as they were leaving. I don't know what happened during the game, but as for after the game, they instigated this whole thing.

1:09 mark you can see the front the band is well into the crowd and the band members are clearly swinging their instruments as they play... What could go wrong?
I imagine what my dad would've said if I busted into a crowd of people swinging an instrument and blaring it in somebodies face, then got my teeth knocked in.

He'd probably say 1. I hope you learned your lesson and 2. I told you I still have a mean right cross.

Can we go back to the good old days when douchebags that instigate **** and get in someone's face actually have some blame when someone knocks them on their ass?

I don't know how anyone could interpret any of this as anything other than a band that was looking to rub opposing fans' noses in the loss. They ignored explicit instructions and pushed their way into a crowded area - not to exit ASAP but to play the fight song right in the faces of opposing fans standing just feet away.

At this point Iowa deserves all the cynicism it gets. IMO the onus is now on them to show that they didn't do this intentionally to provoke a reaction.

Murph now calling the integrity of Chief Newton in to question.

I didn't see it that way. Just was being honest that Newton is employed by ISU. I'm not agreeing with everything they're saying, but they are making the same points that I feel are important...such as how it goes both ways, shouldn't be leading your band into a crowd of opposing fans, no one has come forward ect.

Besides using the wrong exit, from the video, it looks like the whole thing could have been avoided if the Iowa band had just waited 10 more minutes for the crowd to clear.

Or simply not played their instruments.

Making it all the more dumb that they took the wrong gate. Note how ISU's band has already completely cleared out. They, as JP said in the presser, took the right gate and didn't get blocked by the crowd. Iowa would have gotten home quicker had they just gone the right way.

So he’s saying that because of who he works for that he would take the side of his employer over the law and oath to serve and protect? Seems like that would be calling his integrity in to question would it not?

It is a freakin' marching band. It's not a military unit. "Break rank". C'mon.

To me, it just came off as a light comment compared to the context of what's been said since.

Just said "biggest weakness for iowa here is there is no police report or contact"
