Gary Barta everybody

There's a reason the message to the band members said "members who were assaulted can file a police report, but noted, “Law enforcement is limited in the actions they can take in response to reports to the media or online.”"

Sounds like a nice way of saying 'hey dumbasses, go talk to the proper channels if you were assaulted instead of going off on social media'

Sounds to me like the band members reported the incidents to the U of I and were led to believe that the U of I would work with them and investigate the allegations. Then, the U of I unilaterally decided to end the investigation and issue the joint press release with ISU, telling the band members that they have to report the incidents to the police if they want anything done. A real clusterf*** all the way around.

After Satterfield and Everson the U of I should know to call the cops on EVERYTHING.

So, we've heard from the ISU band leader that the person who had ribs fractured tripped and fell on a base drum, and it was not related to fan interaction.

All I want to say is this, how in the hell did a girl get separated from the band, cornered by a group of men and sexually assaulted and NO ONE said jack crap at the time to a police officer? Shame on those band students and anyone else that saw it if it indeed did happen. I honestly cannot fathom something like this happening at a stadium, and as JP said, it should be on video....

That seems plausible but the U of I shutting everything down makes no sense given Barta's "shoot first, ask questions later" press release from Monday.

Gary Barta is not well liked in Iowa City. He’s a terrible representative for Iowa and is only still there because the current Iowa President and he run in the same political circles. They know each other from political fundraisers and dinners from over the years. The Board Of Regents hand picked the president since he also was a political ally of some of them.

He is the one who protects Barta, who should have been fired after the Tracy Griesbaum incident.

I have no idea what really happened with the band and fans but I can say it doesn’t shock me that Barta bungled this. It’s just another black mark on his already checkered history as Iowa’s AD.

This situation just sucks and Iowa could have handled it better.

I'm sure some of it is legit, and some of it is exaggeration. As in everything in life, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle. But, when you are trying to cause a stir, throw as much as possible at the wall to make it sound as horrible as possible and see what sticks.

It feels like to me that theyre throwing a lot of accusations of more 'standard' stuff out there, and using that stuff that most everyone will believe happens (yelling, beer throwing, etc, stuff that isnt acceptable but well, it happens and definitely happens in IC as well) to carry the more severe accusations that themselves have little to no evidence and not even a direct claim by the supposed victim.

It is impossible to.know since no one is providing details. Some people might use the term 'sexual assault" differently from others. even grope could mean different things. It isnt clear what specifically is alleged.

And then you get idiots on social media assuming things that they have no basis for assuming. "But man, that's what I heard!"

Exactly. Barta make vague references about something serious happening, the band make comments about the serious attacks so he has evidence, and then it is ignored? How is that even possible unless you are just completely inept.
If I'm Pollard I put a small team together and contact the band administration and get some information to pass to the police. It obvious UI can't help it's own students.
If we have fans stupid enough to assault band members, they need to be gone.

Yeah, that part makes me really nervous too. That's such a catch-all term anymore to describe violations that can be wildly different in severity.

U of I cannot file criminal complaints on behalf of individuals, and told them that.

I only wish the ISU band had documented all the crap that has happened to them over the years in IC... it hasn't been good at all. Basically everything that has happened in this case has happened to the ISU band in IC with the exception of maybe the "sexual" assault.

But ISU has never done anything about it in the past. Maybe they should have. But nevertheless, Iowa is bringing it to the forefront now, and maybe that's a good thing.... we shall see.

What isn't debatable is how Barta just bungled this thing from the very start and is continuing to do so. The guy is an idiot that is way in over his head in this job.

This is factually inaccurate. One is a R, the other is a D. The one that is a R is closer to a D than a R.

This said, alleged sexual assault has nothing to do with either Iowa, Iowa State, and the vast majority of their fans, two fairly incompetent athletic directors, or two football teams and two bands full of college students.

Using this as a gotcha towards the other team, or other athletic director, notwithstanding their incompetence, or your dislike of them is ignorant.

Allegations need to be investigated by law enforcement. If ISU fans are involved, any Iowa fan who uses this as a gotcha is low class scum, and if the shoe is/was on the other foot, likewise.

You really think Pollard is "fairly incompetent"? If so, you're completely delusional.

I think Pollard is highly competent and has handled this exactly as he should.

Incorrect. Both Scott Dochterman and Mark Moorehouse have discussed this on their On Iowa Podcast when Harrald was hired. I also have friends who have seen them at Republican donor dinners. Bruce Rastetter is friends with both Harrald and Barta. It’s a good old boys club.

Why are visiting bands marching through the crowd/tailgate scene after the game anyway. Doesn’t seem wise.

Hopefully this changes in the future. Seems to me the visiting band should await for most of the stadium to clear out, then unceremoniously board buses immediately outside one of the gates. Then be taken to a suitable nearby location where they can change clothing, use the restroom etc. before heading back to Ames or Iowa City.
