The infamous holding call

How long did it take those plays to develop?
For a receiver to get open around 10 yards, I'd say it took Brock around 3 seconds to read the defense and put it where it needs to be. On the one to Tarique Milton for 73 yards Brock had probably 5 seconds. All in all we gave Brock time to throw. He was not hurrying to get many of his passes off.

Brock was technically hurried on that throw, but the hurry came at the 4 second count and was too late.

They literally only had one guy out week one and ran a 4-3
yes, but last year we ended up running the 4-2-5, wanted to give it a go again this year and tried to find the personel for it but it has not worked out as of yet. So we are going back to mainly a 4-3, which has been picked apart by good decision making QBs and good coaching in the past. Which is what ISU did to minimize pass rush.

Huh? Are you trying to say ISU receiver corps isn't as strong as it was last year? That's a complement to Butler, not a slam on Purdy. Of course Purdy isn't even going to attempt certain throws/routes since Butler is gone...

That is like faulting Mario Andretti for not being able to drive a street car as well as a race car.
Brocks thrown for almost 600 yards, 3 TD's, at a 72% completion rate for a 147.0 passer rating. That is good considering he just played arguably the best defense he'll face all year.

If we are being honest, Purdy does not look as good this year as he did last year after losing his main weapons. Is he good? yes, but the play making ability is not at last years level without Butler.
You literally just saw him throw a 70+ yard TD without "his weapons", as well as set up a trick play for another 50+ yard TD... to "his weapon's" replacement.

How does that "not look as good as last year"?

So not being able to run the 4-2-5 this year is a talent issue with your personnel and not injury related

Agreed, ISU had a good game plan for AJE and the Iowa DL. The ISU coaching staff is a good one and Iowa was lucky to escape Ames with the win. I just think it was the schemes to not let AJE get any kind of momentum in the pass rush, Iowa not letting Purdy win with the RPO, ISU capitalizing on the 4-3 base, Iowa not rushing more than 4, ISU senior OL stepping up and playing a good game. The delays had a lot to do with everyone being off a little. the wet field played a factor. ISU had a bye week to prepare for Iowa and the coaching showed with thier game plan.

Because he won those games with those weapons. He finished with TDs instead of fumbles and FGs.

Everything you said is 100% true. I thought going into this game it was going to be a stalemate. Someone had to win the game at the end and we made multiple mistakes towards the end as well as didn't capitalize on a couple of Iowa's mistakes. Those were two good football teams that still have things to figure out if they want to reach their goals this season.

It is a mix of both right now. Dane Belton is a guy to watch and Iowa coaches like him, but they did not want a true freshman back there running that Star spot. They wanted DJ johnson but he is also a rs freshman to run it but do not like his lack of experience at that spot. Iowa losing 3 guys early to the NFL the last 3 years in the secondary and at least 3 transfers has taken a toll. I do not think of it as talent as much as experience and lack of depth right now on the roster. the early Injuries have also made it easier to stay in base and not get complex with the 4-2-5.

ISU really opened up their playbook on Saturday. I figured they would wait for an important conference game before pulling out that WR pass wrinkle. Jones delivered a very good ball on that throw.

We didn't really score a lot of TDs last year, either. Lot of games under 30 points, most in the 2-3 TD range. We scored 2 on Saturday.

I don't see any meaningful regression from Brock yet this season, in fact, I think his ability to read defenses and get the ball out quickly (and safely) has improved already. We have much greater areas to fix than him and who's around him (like special teams and not killing ourselves with penalties).

I certainly wasn't expecting that play, haven't seen it in years. I hated them trying to run it a second time, though... Jones is a former high school QB IIRC. Good to see his arm is still working well.

I agree and he is a good QB, but he does not trust his WRs like he did Butler to just throw it up to him one on one.

I think if ISU cleans stuff up they will be a 10 win team this year. I think they beat Texas or Oklahoma and run the table with the rest of the league.

There aren't a lot of opportunities to do that against a team like Iowa, who frequently leaves safeties over the top in cover. Our scheme to get the ball out quickly doesn't really lend itself to longball 1-on-1's, either.

I sure hope so. Going into the game, I wanted to see if ISU was a 9-10 win team or a 7-8 win team. Leaving the game, I was tempered back to a 7-8 win team.
