It is still a Hawkeye State

Epenesa hasn't really done much against any team this season, right?

It doesn't seem like the ISU staff was that concerned with him from watching film because they didn't really even scheme to double him or anything.

Lol

As for Iowa All-American defensive end A.J. Epenesa — he had just one tackle. Iowa State didn’t do anything fancy against him – Good-Jones blocked him, sometimes with help from a tight end.

Really, Epenesa was a non-factor.

How is this funny @BLHawk? ISU really didn't do anything special against him. Granted Good Jones played great

I was pleasantly surprised at the job JGJ did against Epinesa. I figured that matchup would be a big reason for the loss.

Game plan helped very well. People screamed at Manning’s play calls but they are probably the ones who didn’t notice that when epenesa started selling out on the pass again that a run was called and JGJ would just let epenesa run himself off the play. Next few plays epenesa would crash in and downing would help out.

Mike Hlas:

Iowa State has a good team. Its previous two seasons suggest it will get better as this one rolls along. In the Big Ten, few teams have defenses as good as ISU’s, and few have a quarterback of Brock Purdy’s quality.

So why didn't anyone else step up then if ISU was giving AJ so much attention?

You realize how few deep drops Purdy had yesterday? There wasn't a lot of chances for Iowa to get to him. It was a pretty good game plan by Manning.

I'm starting to question if you even watched the game. You aren't remembering anything about it well at all.

So you thought Epenesa had a good game? What about Good Jones?

I thought he played ok, not great by any means and the credit for that goes to Manning's game plan of having Purdy get rid of the ball quickly and hats off to the ISU OL.

They performed better than I was expecting.

So Purdy must have passed for not many yards and his yards per completion must have been real low

We really won't know about either team until October. But I had to comment on this post as Hlas' understanding of football is limited at best. He's still living on the fact he has (or thinks he has) limited locker room access, and an old T25 AP vote.

Hah, nice try.

Lucky for ISU, our secondary was depleted by injuries otherwise the Clones may have only scored 3 points again. Iowa just beat the most hyped ISU team ever by playing 13 guys total all night on defense.

Credit to CMC for breaking out the exotic plays like Hayden used to do though.

Purdy will be the best QB you see this year. Defense is another question but our defense is legit

You have 85 scholarships. Not our fault your defense has the Paul Rhoads depth factor

It really is crazy how ISU’s lines played well, Purdy played well, the WRs torched the horrid Iowa secondary, and they lost. I don’t get it. I can just think of the bad calls. That’s the only thing that makes sense.
