TAILGATING GENERATOR

Question for those of you who use one. I recently got a new Honda 2000i generator for tailgating, but I am wondering if they have a gas smell after being used. I only have a van that we use for tailgating and was worried if it did with 2 kids riding in the van on the way home.

You have the generator, right? Why not just fire it up and find out?

Any OPE that runs off of gasoline is going to smell like gas in a small confined area, like a van.
 
That is the best small generator out there. I ran one for 2 days when the power was out and never smelled any gas other than when I started it.

You might be able to strap it to the roof of the van when you are done if you have a roof rack. Seems like most vans do have them, but until kayaking got popular they were never used.
 
Ours has a feature on the gas cap that lets you close the vent. That gets rid of the gas smell for us. Just don't forget to open it when you want to use the generator. Occasionally we forget and can't figure out why it keeps shutting off. Duh, there is no venting for the gas tank unless we open the vent on the gas cap.

Kohler also makes battery inverters (they look like small generators) to which you can attach solar panels.
 
It's crazy the # of people we would run into that couldn't get their generator running, and then we would ask them if they checked the oil. Multiple times we had to tell people that they have a oil level safety built in which won't allow the generator to run with out the proper amount of oil in it. Had to give oil to people multiple times.

I was looking at getting a Jackery or a Black and Decker one as I don't want a true generator as I would also use it for camping trips but unfortunately those don't have enough power to run a TV for a few hours.

The encube kohler ones will run a big tv for 8 hours.

I have a Coleman Powermate that was given to me. It has the Briggs motor on it. It loves gas. Need to come up with a way to rig a bigger tank on it. But running out of fuel is another thing. I forgot it the first game.

Thankfully with this generator it is "check the oil and fill the gas" instead of "fill the oil and check the gas".

Look into a champion inverter generator. Thats what we have and love it. Thing is really quiet and hasnt have us any problems in the 5+ years that we've owned it. They are a little bigger then most but they are also half the price. We bought ours used but close to new for 300.

I had a 2000 Champion many years back and absolutely loved it. I used it to run my bus, which really only ran the amps to power the speakers and sub along with our satellite and 2 TV setup.

My brother in law has the 3100 Champion and has used it for his camper for 5+ years. He has a 30amp service on his with no issues. He has even had a few things go wrong with it and Champion has been very good about sending him replacement parts at no cost.

I got 2 3500 Champions last year, hooked them in parallel, and they ate thru the gas powering my camper which has a 50amp service. I don't know why they ate thru so much gas, which I didn't like, so I sold them this summer and bought the 7000 Honda and love it.

Im looking into a 3100 champion but just not sure if we will pull the trigger yet. We need to do something as 2000 watts isnt really enough anymore.
