Here's the 15 yd penalty called on Johnnie Lang that killed our first drive Saturday. You tell me if this is a good call or not? I know there's a new rule this year, but if this is now considered a 15 yd penalty, then it's no longer football IMO. This is the definition of a perfect block. Shoulder right to the chest. Some say it was blindsided, but how? And don't tell me that the UNI defender wasn't in the play and couldn't have made the tackle.

Definitely was a flag. The refs have been getting it right against us for a long time.

And this was obviously a fumble.

Clearly the defender is behind the play since the RB is facing away from him?

I thought the blindside rule was that you couldn't go back and pick up someone out of the play (which makes sense).

From what I understand, the rule is that you can't come back towards the line of scrimmage to block a player while using excessive force. He definitely used "excessive force" but I thought he was pretty close to running parallel to the line of scrimmage, and not back. I agree its a bad rule since you can still get flagged while making a good shoulder-to chest hit. The next rule they'll make is you aren't allowed to hit a player at all if they aren't directly facing you. Wide receivers and QBs will be nearly untouchable. Hell, the NFL already has "excessive force" rules to protect QBs when they get sacked.

Maybe it’s because I never played football but I just don’t have the pure hatred in my heart for FB refs that I do for BBall refs.

The FB replay refs are the worst, because it's amazing how inconsistently they can still apply different rules. Bball refs behind them. Football refs are okay unless they keep relying on the replay refs to make the correct call.

Tough call. I think it was called correctly by the book (which sucks). As far as how this could have been blocked without getting called, if Lang had put his head accross to the defenders right shoulder I do not think it would have been called. If he also made contact with his hands extended first instead of lunging with the shoulder it may have been a no call too. Seems like another "interpretation call" at this time until it has a clearer definition. Those are always fun

Hope that name didn't ruin your night. :)

I will admit it looks worse in full speed motion, but it's still not a penalty even by the new rule IMO. The play happens at the 0:36 mark.....

Seems harsh compared to years past but also seems like what the penalty was meant to discourage.
