No, it's something else...

This popular nickname for the University of Iowa sports teams is said to have come from the scout, Hawkeye, in James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans published in 1826.

So to be accurate, the Hoks should have some dude in a loincloth and a bow and arrow running around the stadium, scalping the opponents. Not sure how politically correct that would be today.

Why is the ISU mascot a bird if their nickname is supposed to be a weather event?

Is that a fact? Cool, haven't hear that before. Thank you for your post Remo.

That's weird. The state of Iowa is nicknamed the Hawkeye state which is supposedly a tribute to chief Black Hawk. I just figured the U of I was the same thing.

Did Oliver Martin's dad tell you this?

Quite literally this guy, given I know none of you have read the book but many saw the movie...

For pretty much the only time in my life I can say I read the book but did NOT see the movie.
And for the record, since I'm a slow reader, actually have **** to do and place a high value on my time, the movie is pretty much always better than the book. Don't let anyone tell you any differently.

I consider the State of Iowa nickname to be the Tall Corn State.
or The Cyclone State.
The State Bird is the Goldfinch which is what the University of Iowa should actually be referred to, if they want to represent the state.
