All Iowa Football Team---Post Bowl Edition

PFF ranked starting quarterbacks for every team.

Nate came in at 51:

51. IOWA: NATE STANLEY
Lower than some would expect, Stanley just doesn’t have the PFF grades that warrant the kind of hype he’s received in terms of the 2020 NFL Draft. He finished last year with a career-low grade despite throwing for 26 touchdowns for the second consecutive season. In a clearer example of his play on the field, Stanley actually had eight more touchdowns than big-time throws and five fewer interceptions than he had turnover-worthy plays. Still, Stanley wins more often than not and should once again keep the Hawkeyes in contention for the Big Ten once again.

Brock came in at 8:

8. IOWA STATE: BROCK PURDY
Had it not been for Trevor Lawrence, Purdy may be the most polarizing true sophmore quarterback in the country, Still, his effort in the backfield for the Cyclones and his 89.3 overall grade is the second-highest we’ve ever given to a true freshman quarterback (behind Lawrence). He was solid in every outing, save for a tuneup game against Drake in Week 14 last year, and performed well from a clean pocket and with pressure applied. Year 2’s expectations are sky-high in Ames for this bright young signal-caller.

I have a hard time trusting PFF QB evaluations.

That literally makes no sense as to how Bolin won it over Stanley that day... I wonder how they got that so wrong because every one of his statistics from that game was atrocious. Maybe it was a mistake? Usually PFF is pretty accurate on their mark-ups and predictions.

Agree with you except when it comes to QB's.

Look, I know you can be upset that Stanley didn't make their top-50, but their assessment was pretty fair and one that I've seen plenty of Iowa fans state as well. He's a good QB who produces good numbers but can fall apart at times.

Their QB evaluations are the only ones that seem way off track to me.

I mean it is really hard to justify having Bolin higher than Stanley when you look at the productivity they had that day.

I'm sure it's explained somewhere what they value.

If I remember correctly (and I may very well be wrong) they take on target stats which would make this possible.

Any system that grades a 17/37, 198 yards, 0 TD/2 INT line better than a 27/41, 333 yards, 5 TD/0 INT line is suspect at best.

I am not upset, just made the comment that I have a hard time trusting QB evaluations done by PFF.
I mean you're using an outlier that probably was a mistake to justify not trusting them. I understand it, I'm just saying don't hang your hat on that one week two years ago. Analytics are weird but PFF is probably one of the best analytical systems for CFB like Ken Pom is for basketball.

How many more would Iowa win this next year if PFF had Stanley rated as number 1 in their preseason list? Does it guarantee he will have a bad day against Miami or Rutgers?

It’s a formula. A system. Nothing more. We will see soon.

Well if Stanley was rated #1 via PFF I think everyone outside of Eastern Iowa would consider that list as garbage.

And if he was listed number one it wouldn’t help them win a game this fall. That’s last year. Epenesa being rated highly doesn’t mean anything either.

I think every Iowa State fan would say Epenesa being given these pre-season accolades is justified.. I'd also say Purdy being higher than Stanley on every pre-season player ranking is justified as well. No it doesn't mean anything for this upcoming season, but it's just an off-season prediction/ranking that's fun to look at.

Wasn't that the game Stanley missed a ton of wide open deep balls and Wadley and others got a bunch of those yards after catch?

It is also an indication of past work and reasonable expectation of improvement.
