MONDAY MUSINGS: The most important Cyclone that nobody knows

John Kolar got on my radar when Randy Peterson, ace reporter for the DM Register, wrote this on August 2nd:

Praising John Kolar
“Who’s that No. 5?” asked a sideline observer while watching Friday’s practice. Tight spiral. On target. Quick-enough release. “He throws a nice ball,” the man said. That praise came from famed former University of Mount Union coach Larry Kehres, who coached Campbell at the school.

Its been 10 seasons since weve had the same qb start every game... thats a pretty insane stat

Pretty sure every Iowa fan knows who their backup quarterback is.

Pretty sure they think he's better than their starter, too.

Look out, CW. I brought up Kolar and how I wondered if Campbell might play him instead of Mitchell if there was an injury situation this year and it was blasted as ridiculous.

I keep seeing this, and while it's pretty crazy, how common is it for most teams to have the same QB start every game or to only use one throughout a season?

The problem being that CW never said anywhere in that article that Kolar might take the reins instead of Re-al.!What the article says is that Kolar is helping the other two with his knowledge of the Big XII.

I’m pretty sure that we’re okay it John does wind up seeing the field at some point this season. Imagine if he completes a pass to his brother? :)

It's fun having multiple talented QBs and having confidence that if they happen to play, it will be because it's needed instead of musical chairs to switch things up.

Really good article CW! I like the insurance policy at QB. And John K. indeed can be a big help even if if doesn't get too much chance to play. Hopefully Mr. Purdy stays healthy but that is never a sure thing.

It would sure be nice to have some big leads late in some our our games late, to see Re-al and John play. Big if though. I have a feeling they both will get some time regardless.

I really like the way this coaching staff is always looking ahead, instead of making panic reactions. JK is a guy that could step in if Purdy happens to get hurt, and he can help other QBs, plus he probably has a lot of experience at practicing other teams QBs. The have Kyle K. in the QB room, Lanning in the LB room. They found a transfer at punter when Dunn got hurt.

So much better than the "Now what the F do we do?" stuff we saw under previous staffs.

I think both Campbell and Prohm have proven pretty adept at this.

They know more than any of us do about the rosters, after all.

Horton-Tucker and Wigginton leave... and Bolton magically appears.

The best thing about JK is it allows the staff if they would happen to choose to play Re-al in some packages to get the kid in the field without the fear of being screwed if he and Brock got hurt. Wonderful insurance policy.
