Montgomery 3rd string RB on Bears

Give it time. They won't use Cohen as a traditional between the tackles RB much, and I'll be surprised if Montgomery doesn't pass Davis. Nothing against Mike Davis; he's had his moments. But there's probably a reason he's on his third team in five seasons.

Seems like a situation where you have talent in front of him. He's good enough and I think from camp reports everyone knows it. He just has to prove it during games both running the ball and doing all the little things right an NFL offense demands of rbs.

I'm a Bears fan so I've been reading all the articles, listening to all the interviews, and trying to follow as closely as possible. So, while the depth chart reads that way as a precaution pretty much, the coaches are already talking like Montgomery will likely be the 3-down capable back eventually. In fact, I'd be very surprised if by week 3 Montgomery isn't taking the majority of carries, if not even by week 1 or 2. Cohen is great, but he is a specialty guy and not a 3-down back. To adjust the depth chart, they just need Montgomery to prove things on the field that he is already proving in practice. In fact, you've already got analysts out there predicting Montgomery to be one of the surprise performers this year in all the NFL. He is certainly set up in a great situation to realize his potential.

Don't read too far into these pre-season or initial depth charts. I'm a big Chiefs fan and I was scanning over their initial release and they still listed a DB that tore his Achilles a week before.

They have had basically a week of full practice. These depth charts are required to come out so they typically throw names out there from last year.

Don't read into it.

It's early and he's a rookie. They'll make him earn it over the vets.

Yes, I expect there is a bit of team politics. List the veterans ahead of Montgomery until his performance demands that he start. I'm guessing it will take about 2 weeks to happen. That's 2 weeks of practice, not Game 2 of the season.

In today's NFL, "starting" and "3rd string" don't mean anything anymore. They use a lot of guys and people become situational players as well. 3rd down back, etc etc. He will see the field a lot, and even more once they see him perform in game situations. Can't wait for Thursday night. By the way, right/wrong/stupid, I am picking Montgomery with my first pick in my upcoming fantasy draft just because I can.
