... to what lengths would you go to keep CMC here?

IMO, you basically would have to do whatever it takes to keep him.... including decreasing other head coaches' salaries (not MBB or WBB), or even dropping a sport or two.

I know JP would never probably go to that extent, but if we were to lose him, and the football program drops back to mediocrity or worse.... then you might be looking at having to go to those lengths anyway.

Thoughts? What would you be willing to do?

I don't think we can drop a sport. I think we are currently at the minimum for membership.

Also, dropping the salary of the women's golf coach doesn't make a lick of difference in regards to football. It's a drop in the bucket.

If track and cross country didn't count as separate sports we won't even be meeting the minimum of 6 for men's sports to keep our Div I status.

It’s pretty simple.

We are not dropping any sports. Nor do we need to. Today, Campbell makes $3.5M the highest paid coach as of last season was Nick Saban at $8.3M. Dabo Sweeney made $6.5M. So, max is +$5M per year... and that is not going to be for a while. I am sure they are already budgeting for the required increases over time and will keep them coming as needed. Obviously the staff is the other big piece to this equation (don't underestimate the value of Heacock). CPR could never get the right piece to replace Herman when he left. I think Campbell will be able attract talent but don't want to find out sooner than we have to.

In the end the choice for Campbell will be if he wants to be the legend at ISU (think Snyder at KSU, Bowden at FSU, Beamer at VT, etc.) or if he wants to be another piece within a larger tradition at a place like Mich, tOSU, ND, etc. or try his hand in the NFL. I have no idea what he will choose long term. I hope it's ISU, and I think there is a chance. But for now, just enjoying the incredible ride we are on.

It won't be money that takes him away. It'll be a top tier blue blood or the NFL. My guess is Notre Dame after Brian Kelly retires, which is still about a 5-7 years away IMO.

I didn't realize we wouldn't be able to drop any sports, so obviously that's not possible.

I understand at some point money will no longer keep him here if he just wants a higher profile college job or NFL job.

So ultimately, there may be nothing JP can do at some point if CMC has dreams of doing something more. I guess I was just curious if there were a $ amount that people would think is too high to give him?

I’d start by telling him to use whatever the **** logo he wants and let him reinstate the “Orr” cyclone logo and burn in effigy the bugle cyclone.

This. There’s really nothing drastic JP can “do” to “keep” CMC here. As this post says, either he wants to stay here and build something special, something unique, of his own device—or he jumps to either the NFL, or a school with more resources.

Quite fortuitously, what CMC keeps saying, again and again and again, is the former. Matter of fact, he’s seemed to be a bit short recently with reporters who asked again. So, until he demonstrates otherwise, I’ll take Him at his word.

In the meantime, what JP can do isn’t “come up with a huge contract”. It’s do all that he can to avail and enable CMC every opportunity to be successful here.

Like setting aside additional money for assistants. Continually improving facilities. Ensuring that ISU gets the best possible national exposure. And so on.

Which...JP seems to have down pat.

So, for the moment, I’m good. No “worst case scenario” for me.

I have it on good authority that money won’t be the reason he would ever leave. We will get the money to try and keep him.

I imagine its remarkably easier to go to the big money donors and say 'We have what we need, we need more money to keep it' versus 'we need this money to have a chance to be better' (which... given our history was a questionable thing)
