Emphasis on hypothetical as I have absolutely no reason to think this is going to happen.

If Bates decided, after a week to clear his thoughts, that he made a bad decision and wanted to rejoin the team, A) does Chizik allow it and B) do fans accept him?

I would think it would be possible that he realizes the stupidity in his decision and tried to return to the program. I can't see Chizik welcoming him back after all of the talk to recruits about only verballing if they were absolutely sure they wanted to.

I can see the darkness swelling around this thread, but I think if Chizik were to let him back, it would be a hard transition back into his circle of trust. I think the amount of discomfort would be enough that Bates would never want to come back at this point.

Nope and nope.

Especially on Chizik letting him back. After quitting the day before travelling to an away game?

I have a better chance of being welcomed to the team.

Going to agree with your sentiments concerning Bates and this thread.

Remember Bates didn't quit the team, his dad quit for him.

He won't be coming back...

I don’t think PB is interested in re-joining the team. I wish he were. It would definitely be in his best interest. He would definitely play and may even have an opportunity of winning the starting role. This debacle is not the fault of Coach Chizik and the Athletic Department; however, IMO I would have done one thing differently. I would not have issued a press release, talked to the media, or released PB from his Letter-of-Intent (LOI) without Coach Chizik talking to PB personally. The story would have still gone public; however, I would have stated “no comment” until personal contact was made. You are dealing with a 19 or 20-year old kid who was having a horrible week. Poor, rash decisions can be made. Now the bridge has been burned and there is little hope of going back.

Even if he did want to rejoin the team, you have to take into consideration that he requested that Coach Chizik release him from his scholarship. With that said, to come back and ask for the scholarship back would take some stones. Stones that we all know PB or his owner/father dont have. Enough on Bates now, he is in the past
