Kempt, Lanning join ISU Football coaching staff

This is very good for ISU. IMO, when you have guys like Lanning and Kempt come back and want to learn more from the staff and develop into coaches, that's a sign of a quality program that is becoming self-sustaining. Look at how Campbell got to where he is today and in 15 years we may be saying the same thing about Lanning or Kempt or both. This is great for ISU and great for Lanning and Kempt.

Not surprised at all by Kempt. He's always struck me as a football lifer; only someone who really loves the game would stick around for as long as he did before he finally got his shot.

Lanning surprises me some, if only because I thought he'd still be pursuing his playing career. But I suppose this doesn't close the door on that if he happens to get another opportunity.

Great to have them both on board at any rate. It's pretty cool that they get to keep building what they already started, just in new roles.

Kempt will be the quiet, knows his crap type coach
Lanning will be the Rah Rah type coach.

Both are good mix of people.

BTW Lanning knows his crap also. Not saying that. I just see Kempt with a Paper and pen drawing up schemes and so on.

Good move by our coaching staff. Excited for them to get working

Being an assistant coach as your full time gig would be tough. Maybe not too bad at ISU as far as pay.... but I remember reading some rough stories about coaches and their early days barely scraping by as low level assistants. I guess the possible Return on investment is the possibility of becoming a head coach somewhere and making bank.

Lanning draws up plays with his finger in the mud.
Time to start some Lanning/Chuck Norris jokes.

It can be tough, but no different than many entry level jobs. Ames is not an expensive place to live. Also the first full time position job you land you’re looking at six figures if with a P5 team.

I suppose it weeds out the guys who don't really want it. Having someone work their ass off for next to nothing out of the gate is a pretty good way to find out who's in it for the long haul.
