Can't play DVDs recorded from DVR on computer.

I am switching from DirecTV to Dish. I'm trying to copy programs from the DVR to a DVD so I can play them on a computer. The computer won't play the recorded DVDs. They play on the DVD player, but not the computer. Is there a different DVD player app I can download that would play the DVDs?
