WBB: Nice article on the Joens family

The girls are as nice and competitive as the writer states.

Last summer I was officiating guys hoops at IC High. Aubrey was in the stands watching and the youngest was running around the gym. I once saw her doing pull-ups on the bleachers frame,......a soon to be first grader.

Aubrey is the focus, but the article is also about the family as a whole.

Nice background interest story for sure. Now I have a east Iowa restaurant to try out next time I am driving down to the Quads to visit family.

The lack of Hawk recruiting interest is just odd, isn't it? I was wondering about Aubrey, I obviously am too far north to see Iowa HS hoops, and was pretty pleased to see her updated ranking. That's not just a local who are her sisters ranking.

My understanding is that Iowa didn't recruit Courtney, and that basically killed any future relationship between the family and Iowa. Iowa obviously would have recruited Ashley (and, later, Aubrey) if they thought there was any chance whatsoever -- you don't just ignore players of that caliber in your own backyard.

So, did we? Recruit Courtney that is.

The girls' father can be overbearing at times. Potentially a "helicopter" type parent. Iowa's coach would have seen what he was like since they live in the same area. Probably something she chose not to deal with, even though the girls are good players.

I don't think so, but they live in Iowa City and I get the impression she grew up an Iowa fan, so that was maybe more personal for the family than ISU not recruiting her.

I have no inside info here -- just a mix of things I've seen online over the past few years.

https://www.press-citizen.com/story...lini-pick-sharpshooting-city-junior/16789073/

The 5-foot-10 [Courtney] Joens committed to Illinois after visiting Creighton and Drake and receiving interest from South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and DePaul.

...

Growing up in Iowa City and the heart of Big Ten country, Joens always had an eye on playing in the conference.

When Illinois offered in July the chance to play in the Big Ten, it ended up being too much to pass on.

"I always wanted to play in the Big Ten," Joens said. "Just growing up around it and how the Big Ten is recognized as a top conference is something that makes you want to be a part of it."

Every few years after a bad season he'll talk about retirement, but I'm starting to think he'll be doing this as long as he's physically able.

I consider pretty much everything he says as scripted and take it all with a grain of salt. I don't generally pay much attention to what coaches say.

The story I heard was that they DID recruit Courtney and kept promising that they would offer at some point but never did, so the Dad felt like he was lied to the entire time, thus the contempt with Iowa and their staff.

When my family lived in Solon, we lived down the street from the Joens'; very nice family and we would see all the girls lined up in front of Lisa dribbling basketballs where ever they went. Can't say that I ever remember them wearing a Hawkeye shirt, so I wouldn't say that they were big fans (like most of the neighbors). Brian had a very high basketball IQ; both of my kids had him as a coach. My daughter used to make fun of how he spoke, but he knew basketball. We were hoping he would become the Solon boys basketball coach sooner than later.

I had a tenderloin at Joensy’s in Iowa City a couple weeks ago. It was excellent. Lots of Illinois and Iowa State stuff on the walls. If you like tenderloins, I highly recommend it at Joensy’s. It’s just north of I-80 on the east side of Iowa City, Dodge St exit.

If everything BF says is scripted then someone wrote a bad script LOL The way he talks after games is about as unscripted as it gets.

players are well trained on what to say. BF is very bi-polar in his post games, being both very calculated and repetitive in what he says, then also very off the cuff and emotional at times.
