Iowa Football Recruiting

I'll take "Things hok fans were mocked for saying five years ago" for $2,000, Alex.
Five years ago when a 2 win Iowa State team beat Iowa in Kinnick, you guys were probably better than us, there I said it. Probably was a tough game for Iowa fans to swallow considering how bad we were.

How many NY6 bowls? How many conference title bids? How many playoff bids? You know, the stuff that matters. They’re a better program, but not in ways that make a substantive difference.

4 NY6 bowls in the last 11 years and two conference titles I believe? That's without looking but either way much better than Iowa

Yeah we looked pretty bad in the first three quarters of the KSU game and bounced back. The Drake game was a fluke game but that's okay we still won. I was talking about when we won 5 straight games in conference. I would take finishing 7-1 to end the regular season and make a good bowl game than losing 3 straight games, which essentially booted Iowa out of the B10 West race to make it to a bowl game you make every other year. We also had a victory against another top 10 opponent, who at the time had the heisman front runner on their team, and Iowa's best win was against.... Iowa State.
You guys were really playing well during that stretch.

Yes and Iowa was played well during different stretches of last year too. I don't think it's blasphemous to say that Iowa State might've been a better team. Even the last game of the year that we lost we were playing good football against a really good team and came up just short. Iowa was playing against a good team as well (probably a little worse) and ended up coming out just ahead in the end.

Iowa's best win last season was against Mississippi State.

While I don't think Iowa State is above Iowa right now, considering we haven't won against them the past two years and both teams have had good seasons, I do think we are probably more hyped than Iowa. Iowa is right where they usually are, which is trying to battle for the top spot in the Big 10 West and possibly being ranked. Iowa State is being brought up as the outright third best team in the Big 12, having the best defense in the Big 12, showing up on "must watch games in 2019", etc. The hype is larger than Iowa's because we were a laughing stock in the Big 12 and also the country, and all of a sudden we are being talked about as a team that could make the conference championship game.
Isnt that essentially what you just said about Iowa being a contender for the West title, which would make them be in the conference championship game? My point is the hype is not more for ISU, it is about the same as Iowa, with a 3-4 place finish in the big 12 being predicted by most. That does not make them more hyped than Iowa. I will concede maybe they are both equally hyped for the coming year.

You could easily argue the 3rd best team in the Big 12 > best team in the Big Ten West

It's harder to make the Big 12 championship game than win the Big 10 West... Northwestern was the 4th best team in the entire Big 10 last year and made the championship game.

I wouldn't say Iowa is the team I'd strive to be like, I'd say something more on the lines of Oklahoma State, which I think could be reasonable. Having a couple or a few seasons in a row with 10 wins or more, consistently winning 8-9 games a year, 7 being a bad year, and maybe having a break out year. Iowa's a little below that level.

Same level of success or same type of football?

If ISU wants to get there they need to play defense way better than OSU has. Off to a good start so far so that's encouraging.
