Also loving this thread. Am hoping for an interview for a new position in DMPS; otherwise, probably hitting the job market again (see related post in Violent Students thread). Had the first phone screener earlier - think it went okay?

I've sat in on a few interviews for teaching positions in our building. We now have a script to follow for questions that are asked. As an English teacher, I always ask what book(s) applicant is currently reading. "Um,... I really don't like to read." Oh, how's that going to work out for you as a potential English teacher? Next.

When I was interviewing 8 years ago, there was one question everyone asked. "If you had a disagreement with a co-worker, how would you handle it?"

"Um, see you in 10 years, 5 if we're in Maine."

Interviews are one thing but HR peeps screening candidates based off of a phone interview regarding a position they are clueless about is one of my sore spots as well.

Oh, yeah. This reminds me.

Back when I was working I was a first line supervisor in a Government Engineering office. Multi-discipline. We had an opening for a Mechanical Engineer.

HR sends me a dozen resumes, only a few had degrees in Mechanical Engineering. The rest were EE's, CE's, IE's etc. I call and ask why are you sending me these? I need a mechanical Engineer.

She says gov't hiring policy is any engineer is minimally qualified for any other engineering position regardless of degree and experience.

I gasped. "So, um, if you were going for a helicopter trip you'd be fine if the pilot had only piloted a fixed wing plane?"

Damn, I'm glad I'm retired.

I get where you are coming from but my brother is an ME but he worked exclusively as a Civil E in the Army Reserve. But again, gov'ment.

Kind of related, but I was at a company and we were looking to fill a position. A resume came across the hiring manager's desk for a guy I used to manage.

I was asked my opinion of the candidate and given his current resume

Well that resume looked really really familiar. The kid basically stole my resume and used it. Don't know how he got a copy but it was almost word for word.

I take it he didn't make it though the rest of the process.

This guy had my Spidey-sense tingling from the beginning of the resume. It had his name centered at the top, and beneath it (where you might put a title or position) he had "THE Professional Engineer".

Was he an OSU grad?
