MONDAY MUSINGS: How important is it for Matt Campbell to beat Iowa in 2019?

**** Iowa

Any win is good but win this game or not, Iowa fans won't ever shut up so whatever.

CMC hasn't beat Texas either and screwed up last year vs. TCU too so let's see things improve in those situations.

In the last few years, we needed the first few games to figure things out. I think Campbell will care and be more ready this year. At Toledo, he never had hopes of displacing Ohio State as the premier team for the state. Here, it is a realistic possibility. Plus, the nation will be paying much more attention to the in-state rivalry this year.

P.S. Was hoping for some "reading between the lines" of Campbell comments. Maybe we will get some from the summer podcast.

I don't necessarily feel like it is a must win for CMC this year but I do think that a win over the Hawks would help support JP's comments that he made about the bear. Everyone can sit there and pretend that we don't care if we lose to Iowa as long as we play well moving forward but we absolutely care and we need take the Hawks behind the wood shed this year. If we lose this year Hawk fans will be windier than a Danny Mac press conference and I'm tired of hearing it.

It’s important in that to get to 9 or 10 wins you need that game.

For whatever reason, Campbell seems to struggle against Iowa and Texas.

I don’t really care.

CMC has done amazing things the last few years. One trend that I think we need to kick is performance on the big stage. Our team has not shown up in these types of games recently and/or played their best game which applies to Iowa. Other games last year that come to mind TX and Wash St. I know we're picked 3rd in conference but these are the games we need to win to get to that next level. Beating Iowa and to some extent beating them soundly would be a great start. Same story with TX. We've shown up very poorly against them lately. That will certainly be a huge stage later this year. Just my opinion.

Those two teams have probably the biggest and most physical lines we face every year. Campbell is trying to win by having... big and physical lines, as well.

That works with "speed" or "finesse" teams, but as soon as we run into another mauler, we are finding we are just not quite as good at brawling as those programs are.

This is 100% accurate. I would argue that our o-line will be up for the challenge this year though. With what we bring back and the depth that has been built I really expect this unit to look much better this year.

This is very true. Having a mobile quarterback with dual-threat ability should help out this time around. Their D-line ate us up when they could sell out and flush the pocket all day with no consequence. Plus with Tom Manning back, I feel very confident in the play calling to better counter what they try to throw at us. I also drank a gallon of kool-aid this morning, so....

When I went to ISU, the team sucked and the upsets against Iowa and Nebraska felt like the only possible bright spots to a long season.

Now, it's one more game. I want to win it more than some of the other non-cons because they are a Power 5 team and they are an in-state rival, but that's it. If I still lived in-state and had to deal with their fan base, I'd probably rank it higher just so I didn't have to hear them I guess.

Agreed. The West Virginia (#6) game last year was a big stage and ISU failed to show up.

"Despite being the winningest coach in Iowa history, Kirk Ferentz is only 11-9 against Iowa State."

I wonder how many Hawk fans that like to talk about how dominant IA has been over ISU in recent years realize this stat. Only 11-9 after their 4 game winning streak, being favored in every game since 2000, and 4 different ISU coaches. Just an interesting stat IMO.

They always refer back to the Fry years when they went 15 straight. As if these 18-20 year old recruits care about some stat from before they were born. None of these kids coming into the programs from in-state have ever seen TOE as the more dominant program. In fact many of these in-state recruits saw ISU win more often than not when they were picking their favorite team.

As it relates to our season overall? Not very.

As it pertains to my rivalry-induced insomnia? Extremely.

Sounds about right. It's not all that big a deal in the larger scheme of the 2019 season and recruiting - there are nine other games on the schedule more important than this one. But it's still an in-state rivalry game and a big one for us fans.

It is not super important but winning this game consistently will absolutely help in-state recruiting and bowl eligibility year after year but it obviously has zero impact on our chances to win the Big 12. Important, but not a priority. If ISU loses to Iowa every year but we still get to eight wins it won't matter overall except to us fans.
