Writer used his metrics explained in the link to rank and tier the top 50 with the reasoning behind each. Purdy is in very good company entering his Sophomore year.

Rank Tier 1 Quarterbacks
1 Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama, JR)
2 Trevor Lawrence (Clemson, SO)

Rank Tier 2 Quarterbacks
3 Jake Fromm (Georgia, JR)
4 Sam Ehlinger (Texas, JR)
5 D'Eriq King (Houston, SR)
6 K.J. Costello (Stanford, SR)
7 Ian Book (Notre Dame, SR)
8 Justin Herbert (Oregon, SR)
9 Shea Patterson (Michigan, SR)
10 Jalen Hurts (Oklahoma, SR)

Rank Tier 3 Quarterbacks
11 Kellen Mond (Texas A&M, JR)

12 Brock Purdy (Iowa State, SO) - Admittingly, this is a bold ranking for Brock Purdy, but his freshman season was quite rare. Purdy is one of two freshmen quarterbacks (Jameis Winston) to average over 10.0 YPA since 2000, and we’ll find out if that was because of Hakeem Butler or not this upcoming season. I’m betting on Purdy.

When will people quit saying the Big 12 doesn't play defense? Look at the fact you have 5 Big 12 QBs ranked in the top 25 in the nation. Then throw in #38 and #42, you have 7 in the top 42. 70% of your league QBs are in the top third of the country. Almost every week you are defending against a top tier QB.

Supposedly, or so some say, the Big Ten is a stronger defensive league. Well gee, could it be somewhat related to having only 5 QBs rated in the top 50? Most weeks you get to defend against some mediocre or worse QB. Not exactly apples to apples.

The national perspective of the conference is Texas, Oklahoma.. and everybody else. Oklahoma's defense has been joke for several years and Texas has underwhelmed for a decade. When OU gets on the big stage, their defense has been atrocious. The casual fan doesn't care about points per possession or how good the offenses are, they see box scores like 59-45 and 66-52 and jump to conclusions.

Let's try to take a slightly more analytical approach that this perception, According to S&P+ the B12 was the 2nd best overall, 2nd best offensive, and worst defensive of the P5 conferences last year.

(Average S&P+ ranking by conference)

The differences can largely be attributed to what styles of offense the various conferences tend to favor, with the B12 having a stronger focus on up tempo and spread offenses. Where as the B1G is more of a defense and ball control focused league.

As for why the SEC is so far ahead of everyone, S&P+ takes recruiting rankings into account, and with the Southeast having such a glut of talent, the SEC has been winning the recruiting battles for a while and has helped to inflate their numbers.

I just don't get the love for Jalen Hurts. He was ok at Bama playing behind one of the best lines in the country and surrounded by weapons. I will be curious to see how he does at OU because other than his running ability his game seems to have a lot of holes in it.

I was thinking the same thing. He will have some nice weapons at OU and his ability to run will be a bigger factor against Big 12 defenses I'm sure, but I'm still not sold on the guy.

Of course not every school can have an elite badass Heisman candidate QB like Iowa has ;)

Other than elite talent Trevor Lawrence most of the guys above Brock are upperclassmen that likely also redshirted too. That's how good Brock is.
Dude, there’s a reason that Alabama offered Purdy a scholarship. The kid is an absolute stud. While nobody can replace Butler, I think overall we are deeper this year at the WR position and Purdy can put up some beautiful numbers.

Bingo. Purdy is completely different than any QB we've had for a long time. Just ask Nick Saban

H. Butler: 1318 rec. yards
T. Milton, D. Jones, C. Kolar, L. Akers, C. Allen: 1185 rec yards

H. Butler 9 rec TDs
all those other guys: 8 TD

H. Butler 22 ypc
all those other guys 11.18 ypc.

we all love Brock, but this offense is really going to miss Butler. There's a good reason the staff went after 2 non HS WR's.

Next man up. It’s college football, every year you’re going to “miss” someone who’s “not replaceable”. Every team goes through it. Many didn’t think we’d be able to replace Lazard.

It’s possible to find another great WR even if they have different qualities to make them great. It’s possible to spread the ball to more guys instead of just going to one.
