UPDATED: How should ISU honor Jack Trice more?

How about a pavilion near the campanile where the original memorial service was held. If done up well enough it could expose Jack's story to a lot of people who visit central campus but never come close to the football stadium.

Also that location would emphasize Jack as a student-athlete who was first and foremost a student, a fraternity member who had academic goals and a husband. He was much larger than just the athletic part of his life. His story is an inspiration to all people; students, faculty, staff, Iowans, etc. A well-done memorial near the campanile could broaden the exposure to Jack's story and life very well.

Also- for the 100 year anniversary game we should officially retire his number and present his jersey to a living family member.

I like the idea, but I don't think there has ever been any official recognition of his number period by the university.

Maybe better, would be to have one member of the team each year given the honor of wearing Jack Trice's number for that season. Sort of a Jack Trice Memorial Scholarship.

Maybe some statue or graphic recognition at each of the four entrances to the stadium. I liked his statue but never really saw it because I never entered the stadium on the north side of the Jacobson Building.

How about a standard Trice throwback used more regularly. As we keep changing uniforms the only constant being a Trice throwback would be a cool, symbolic gesture.

great idea and very visible. Each year one game should be in recognition of Jack Trice and the team should wear the uniforms. ESPN falls all over themselves to promote U of Iowa Childrens Hospital. they would do back flips to honor a real hero.

I very much like the idea of having an annual Trice-memorial game and doing throwback uniforms for that game. And, certainly, we really need to do something even bigger for the 100th anniversary coming up.

It also seems like Iowa State is missing an advertising and recruiting angle in having the only college football stadium named after a black athlete, and a fallen black athlete at that. It would be really useful and advantageous to push that connection out to the public at large - at every single game. I think it would pay some dividends in donations, enrollment, and recruiting.

For sure--this is something I've mentioned before. There should be an annual game during October, both home and away where ISU does something with Jack Trice. Perhaps every five years or so, they do a full-blown throwback, and in the other years there is a different helmet decal or special shoes or something more minor. (Recall the mashup I did of the 1980s Cy wearing Jack's uniform as a helmet decal.)

I also think ISU should have an annual race as part of the "Jack Trice Week" and a 6k race just happens to translate into 3.7 miles. Start by the future location of the statue on campus, wind around the pretty spots, then end at the stadium near the "new" memorial. Hold it on Sunday after the game.

I knew you would already have some good idea. Although, frankly, I was expecting more. How about some ideas for the new pavilion? How tall should the new Jack Trice statue be?

Ghostbusters II tall. Let's make an impression.

I'd like to see your mashup of the 80's Cy wearing Jack's uniform. I don't recall seeing that.

I wouldn’t mind seeing his letter on a graphic somewhere in the new game day plaza. It would be a nice way to honor him and bring a little more attention to it

Sorry I missed this. I don't have much time to internet, so it's usually easier if people email me these days.

Here it is--just another example of how you can continually honor Jack Trice in a "low-stakes" kind of way that is cheap, yet would generate more revenue vs cost with merchandise sales.

This might be an unpopular thought - but why do we HAVE to honor him more? It’s not that I’m opposed to it, it’s just we’ve already named the stadium after him, we have a statue for him, we’ve had uniforms that honor him (although they ended up being wholly inaccurate).

Look, I’d love a football-themed statue in the new plaza and I’d love to have at least once an alternate uniform that was historically accurate, I guess what I’m saying is I’m not opposed to honoring Jack Trice, I’m just over the attitude that we have to do more to honor him, because we’ve already done a ton.

I was thinking that there should be a godzilla-sized hologram of him leading the team out.

Then I started thinking how at the end of the current hype video right after the tornado warning message a hologram tornado appears around the tunnel, and it drops off Trice around the one and he runs to the South end zone where the tornado takes him back.

Anything less than these theatrics is not worth my time. ;)

How are we going to do historically accurate uniforms when the rules have changed so drastically that anything that is even nearly accurate would be illegal?

There have been mock-ups in the uniform thread. There’s obviously no getting around the number rule, but now that we have a better idea of what the Trice uniform actually looked like, a better throwback uniform can be done.

Using the correct colors would be a good start. Don't worry- I'm sure they'll incorporate facemasks. :D

Don't approach this as honoring Trice more. Think of it as honoring him appropriately. I don't think an annual commemoration is necessary, but a 100 year anniversary definitely deserves some major pomp & circumstance. The nation needs to hear his story. Your average hak fan has no idea.
